Strap for securing stem

I have a Dahon Speed 7. The bike came with a plastic tab that secured the hinge lever of the handlebar stem. This plastic piece has broken off. As a safety precaution, I'd like to add some sort of strap that will prevent this lever from loosened as I ride. I did have one incident when the stem started to collapse after I pedaled one stroke from a stopped position. I have since adjusted the tension on the stem, and now it is quite sturdy, but I'd like to add a strap for increased safety.

Can anyone recommend a good sturdy way to add a strap. I don't want it to be too big of a hassle to tighten and loosen the strap as I'll need to fold and unfold the bike whenever I ride it. Thanks.

BTW, Dahon won't replace the stem. It doesn't fall into the "faulty stem" category. I understand that some stems would literally crack over time. My bike doesn't have this design flaw.

A piece of two-sided Velcro (like this - cut to length) would probably work. It's useful stuff to have around.

Hi,

Use a tiewrap / ziptie tightened enough to hold into the dish
of the lever but loose enough to slip over the end of the lever.
Use a big/wide one, it will slide a lot easier and do the job a
lot better looser than using a skinnier one on its limits.

rgds, sreten.

I actually have a Velcro watchstrap around my toptube in case
of possible emergencies, but here I think a plastic loop is better.

FWIW I can't believe Dahon wont replace a dirt cheap
plastic safety part for free, that is just plain stupid,
and very irresponsible legally I'm pretty sure.

up front I apologize for the shipping charge fo such a small item..... always can order more of course fo the same amount or even free shipping ...

those small parts alone by itself are the royal pain in the butt to make a work order, packing slip, invoice and paypal charges than add USPS or Fedex/Ups and all that snazz and all of the sudden it cost me double what I charge ... and customer is still sour ..paying 10 dlr ... I dont like it but cant do much about it ...

Best Thor
