I recently finished my second lugged frame though I don't have any facing/reaming/chasing tools so I had to take it to a shop. Everything went by fine until they went to face the bottom of the headtube and facing bit was hitting the portion of the lug on the downtube. These are just standard size LS long point cast lugs with a 1" headtube. He was using a normal Park headtube facing/reaming tool. I wasn't there as I just dropped it off to run some errands as I don't live by a shop anymore and drove over an hour to my closest shop.

Mind you I've done this all before when I worked at a shop and built my first frame so I don't know if the employee just didn't know what he was doing or if I need a different brand facing tool to finish this. The top of the headtube didn't have any issues but you can even see where the bit caught the lug. I want to ride this before it snows! lol.

it's probably a newer tool that's made to go up to 44mm. An old-school 1" facer will no doubt do a better job.

If there's going to be a frame 3 or 4 or ... This may be the time to think about buying some of yoir own frame prep tools. Yes, they are pricey but if you can take your time, deals can be found.

Took it to Assenmacher's in Flint MI and busted out the Campag tool kit and faced and reamed it with no issues. This is my first frame I built on my own after my frame course four years ago. I've been eyeballing the Icetoolz facing/chasing/reaming kit for $345 shipped. I live over an hour away from a decent shop so it's a bit of a hassle for anything labor related that I can't handle (normally higher end specialty frame tools I just dont have yet).

I used to work in a shop before moving to the sticks of MI and had everything at my fingertips for free tools wise.

a good shop may not have what you need if they update their tools a lot. A tool made for 1 1/8 will work no problem, but now people have facers for 44mm, and that's pretty wide for 1" steerers, even though the tool may be made to accommodate that internally

The problem is that she shop used a Park tool. They use an oversize facer behind the reamer, and it's not all that rare that it touches the bottom of the down tube lug, if there isn't enough extension of the head tube below the joint.

Find a shop with Var, Bicycle Research or Italian head tube facing tools, and problem solved.
