Soda Blasting or Sand blasting
I have a cro moly frame that I am building, and wanted to find out from some way more experienced guys the best way to strip a frame. I'm not going to chemically strip-purchase the material and take the time, I might as well ship it out. So that's where I am with it. I have a sand blasting guy that I found that has told me he has sand blasted hundreds of frames over the years. They use a very fine sand, and have never warped a frame, or pitted one from excessive heat or too coarse of sand. On the other hand, soda blasting is from my understanding, even gentler. SO?

LuckySailor, are you saying you are going to strip a painted frame, then paint it, then build it up with parts? Or is it a frame you have just built and are looking to get it cleaned up so you can get paint on it?

Is this guy local, or are you shipping it? If it's local, go have a look. If you have found a guy who really can convince you he has blasted 100s of bike frames, not motor bikes that are 1/8" or thicker, but .6mm stuff. What isn't to like, so you find someone else who hasn't ever done a bike, but has different gear. There are a lot of ways to mess up a job. Of course the safest thing is if the media isn't as hard as your frame, but if the guys running it can get your paint off safely, and get your paint a good surface to grab onto, should be fine.

Ah! Now I understand your question. This is a new frame that I had couplers added to. Now I would like to strip off the existing paint, and repaint. Then finish the build up.

yea, no luck with the walnut shells. Couldn't get a good flow of media, and I think I have water in my lines. Should have blown down the tank before I started. Not patient enough. Yes I have water separators-one on the blaster one in line. They were empty but the tank had water in it. Off to the blaster tomorrow. Sealed all the holes with tape or screws.
