Dave talked us into going up El Toyonal, which connects to Wildcat Canyon, instead of taking Wildcat all the up as I always do. I’d never ridden this section of the road. It’s steeper and more challenging but worth it for the scenic connection and discovery of a new route to incorporate into my rides.

The Bears Loop takes you around a couple reservoirs east of Berkeley in the Orinda and El Sobrante area. We took the old road that runs along the San Pablo Reservoir—a mixed terrain trail that is mostly gravel with cement in some sections.

I cheaped out and used an SR Laprade post instead of a Campagnolo Super record post. It does the job and looks the part. I did splurge on this nice Yokozuna “Vintage Cable Housing” (that’s how it’s labeled).
