I opted for a sticker minimalist look. The only decal attached is for the Tange Champion #2 tubing, as was also used on the original SR frame. I like how well the orange color used in this decal also matches my chosen bike color. I might add a simple Araya decal to the headtube someday, but I like telling people the story of the bike so keeping it stealth prompts that conversation.

Shift Levers: Suntour SL-IP00-B. Used in common with both the Superbe Pro and Sprint series indexed derailleurs. These can do Friction, 6-S Indexed or 7-S Indexed. | Notice front and rear brake calipers are recessed bolt mounts.

Frame as purchased. Based on frame specifics and remnants of blue paint inside the bottom bracket, plus sellers description of original part compliment, it was determined this started life as a '84 SR Maxima that was repainted. The rework streaking, dark brown in this case, was popular in the early 90's. I had the frame stripped and powder coated 'Illusion Orange'. I am a Suntour Fan-Boy and I find it hard to turn away any vintage Japanese frame that uses the high-end Superbe Pro dropouts!

1984 Araya (Japan) - Frame is primarily Tange Champion #2 tubing. Frame and fork weigh in at 5.86lbs. Although originally decked out in time appropriate Suntour Superbe Pro group set (friction shifting), I opted to upgrade to a late 80's Suntour Sprint Group (indexed shifting). Wheels are currently Mavic rims (32H) laced to Suntour Superbe PRO hubs (BH-1500). I do have a later set of 32H Sprint hubs (HB-SP00) that will be laced up later to complete the Sprint Group.

Original decals were in pretty good shape. I did need to touch up some of the lettering on the 'Special Road Racer' down-tube text. The top-tube text is a dedication to my friend Patty, whom I call Ms. P. The bike colors remind me of a bubble bee and Ms. P. is allergic to bee stings as we found out on a group ride a couple of years ago. The - Ms. P's Bee - decal was made by Veloink.

I upgraded to a crank that allows replacement of both chain rings. The original 1975 S10-S used a three bolt (110BCD) Sugino Maxy with the larger chain ring permanently swaged to the crank arm. Crank - Sugino New Maxy NJX-2AL (110BCD) FUJI Branded - from 1977 Fuji S10-S Chain Rings - Sugino 52T and 38T Pedals - MKS Sylvan Silver (NEW) Toe Clips - Christophe (Small)

Brakes - Dia Compe Gran-Compe GC610 Center Pulls using their model 1243 straddle cable bridges. The Gran Compe is a higher quality finish version of the famous model 610 brake calipers. The 610's were originally furnished on this model year.

Original Frame when purchased. The metallic purple is not a color that appeared in any of the Fuji (American) catalogs from the mid-80's time period. As you can see the frame had no decals on it at all. The only means of identification was the unique Fuji frame serial number and the Fuji embossed fork (Both dated March of 1986 BTW)

Suntour Superbe Pro Logo on down-tube I created the graphic for this and Velocals made the decals. As I was going to deck the bike out with mostly Suntour Superbe Pro components I decided to give recognition to that fact by the highly visible down-tube decal.

My starting point. Picture from the original eBay auction and where I began this build journey. I was surprised and very happy to be the only bidder on this frame. I have seen very few of these frames, or complete bikes, from Fuji's two top models in that late 70's or early 80's time frame on eBay since this acquisition. They are rare! This is a 52cm (20.5 C-T) frame which is the lower end of my range of 52 to 55cm. I'm 5'8 It only took me a few months to collect the period top of the line Suntour components to complete this build as presented in this album.

Top Tube "Newest" logo view. The top tube clips are Compagnolo as Suntour never made -pretty- clips, only some spring loaded versions! So I tip my hat to the Italians on this one ;) Brake Levers - Suntour Superbe CB-3200's Brake Hoods - Rustines Gum (Great replacement for original Superbe hoods)

I like them as they use Suntours Power Control (ratcheted) friction shifting, but in a very small sleek package. The standard shifters for the first generation Superbe derailleurs where straight friction and worked well, but not as well as these! As you can see they are fill-engraved labeled "Suntour Superbe Pro".
