Well, the Moderators haven't shut him down yet. Probably more pressing "street crimes" that need policing. I would think that retrieving IP addresses would be relatively simple. It'll just take one slip up when his basic personality emerges, and voila. Caught.

What you are describing sounds more like the General Excise Tax we have here (and I guess also in New Mexico). It the more typical "sales tax" system I think you will find the buyer is liable for the tax, and the seller/merchant has a "trust" relationship with the state for amounts collected.

Some businesses screw up... but I am expecting sales tax issues to become even more convoluted as states try to regain the revenus lost in the internet age when people order from out of state sites.

I know a few people who live in New Hampshire (no sales tax) and they get ticked off because people come up there to buy things without sales tax, and don't contribute to the state, while residents pay comparatively large property taxes.

As long as I am told what I am paying before I buy, I am good, it doesn't matter a lot whether the money is going to the company, the state or the manufacturer. And Pennsylvania is another state where we are expected to pay taxes at income tax time for any purchases we made from out of state... whether via the internet, or traveling elsewhere to buy it... now that seems punitive, since I don't think any state is going to bypass collecting taxes if I buy from out of state.

Any chance they used public roads to ship your stuff, had any public school grads employed in teh business, had police and fire protection at the store, etc? You benefitted from their infrastructure and services.
