No, but that's because I'm okay with paying my fair share of the costs for the public infrastructure of the state and city in which I reside.

In Virginia if you buy something online and the seller does not collect Virginia sales tax you are supposed to pay it when you file your state income tax.

This was from a merchant on the East Coast, I am way out West, and delivery point is out West I need not support the infrastructure of a place I will not set foot in again, unless I go to Miami, FL. to see my grandfathers grave.

Yeah, the company remits the collected tax to the state in which the purchase was made. And like bhchdh stated, depending on the state you live in, you're going to be in a spot of a trouble if your state agency decides to audit you and you haven't been declaring sales and use tax on your state income tax forms.

Well this was not a ten buck purchuse, let just say it was sales tax in the hundreds of dollars. BTW I think it is wonderful that you like spending my money, maybe you would like to donate to my NEW BICYCLE FUND? How much can I put you down for?

Apprently Florida adds sales tax to both in state, and out of state transactions.

Must have been a tenths situation.

Internet retailers will charge tax to anyone living in the state in which they have a physical presence. If the retailer does not have a presence in your state, they are not obligated to do so, but the customer is obligated to declare the purchase and pay sales tax to their home state.

Florida does not require businesses selling online to collect sales tax from buyers in other states unless the business has a physical presence in that state. That presence can be any number of things, including a brick & mortar store, a warehouse, or an office. If the business does collect sales tax, it will be on behalf of the buyer's state, not the seller's. (In other words, if the business was going to charge you Florida sales tax, they were doing so mistakenly.)

Since your location states "the Sonoran desert", it's probably safe to assume you're in Arizona or California. Both of those states require payment of a "use tax" on purchases from out-of-state vendors that don't collect sales tax. So in this case, you shouldn't have been charged Florida sales tax, but you would be legally obligated to pay an equivalent use tax to your own state, likely to be noted on your annual income tax return.

I am actually waiting for the op to start a thread that is not a complaint or insult to something or someone.
He does not like his LBS and now he does not like on line shopping...guess he will not be buying much.

Well, that's how your state raises revenue in the absence of an income tax.

UK its 20%, but that funds the NHS.

Oregon ups the Taxes on Income to compensate for not charging sales tax.

No state has the resources to ever audit sales tax dodgers. Not until they ask the NSA for the info, amazing they haven't thought of that actually.

That has occurred to me too. Who has paid our state legislatures to come up with a system that benefits out-of-state vendors at the expense of local merchants?

Maybe the OP can spread his 'horror story' and frighten people back to shopping local.

I'll just incorporate myself, then create a foreign subsidiary of me, then sell myself to said foreign subsidiary.

Life is better as a corporation.
