People stared at me that one time I rode in a fencing mask (no other way to carry it at the time).

My "hybrid" is very eye catching, too.

People constantly stare at me as I pass by. They will look right into my eyes, wide eyed and just stare as I pass. Some will literally stop and stare, slack jawed.

At stop lights, people ask me how much my bike cost and tell me how great it looks.

I admit, I stare at riders as they pass by as well when I go for walks. It seems so much faster and funner than walking!

Do people stare when you ride? What do you attribute this to?
I draw crowds that follow me down the road. When they are able to speak they say they've never seen so much awesomeness on display in one place since the day Chuck Norris came to town.

Yeah OK ... now that I can see! I understand why people might stare in that situation!

I don't dress flashy or drab when I ride. I'm not looking for attention.. Very sensitive bunch here as it seems people are criticized for the smallest things or observations. I still haven't figured out this forum and have to be careful what I post for fear of being ostricized

snubbed and passed by roadies, getting stared at... Relax. Let the 'self-conscious' go and just ride. You should have seen it in the 70's when NO ONE rode in cycling shorts and you could count on one hand the number of adults riding bikes in a week in Nothern Lower MI. I'll bet there were only 10-15 people in G.T. County that even had cycling clothing and 2/3 of those were XC ski racers who cycled in the summer to stay fit.

FWIW, when younger and super bike fit, I got a couple of dates after being stared at from behind on training rides with some rather attractive young women. I stared right back when it was their turn at the front of the paceline. Mutually assured cycling tight attraction.

Occasionally people stare at me but I believe that is because I am a good looking guy who also happens to ride shirtless

.. Great post and thanks.. I'm not self conscious but I do make a point of observing details and see some very odd things in this new to me bicycle culture. It's all good

I'm designing an alert system that predicts the surrounding area of the rider that will provide alerts and if necessary take action against collision. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out the part that takes control of the body yet to steer, brake, or accelerate out of danger. If someone can figure this out, I'll give you 5% of profits.

Yes. I am not particularly attractive or flashy, I ride in plain clothes on an old 3 speed most of the time. Cycling is not big around here, especially not on the street, so I speculate people are surprised to see me. Most smile and many will wave or say hi. I admit, this is very nice in contrast to the often negative attention I receive from car drivers.

Where I USED to live it was considered that anyone on a bike must have got a DUI. Where I live now lots of people ride bikes, it's great!

I don't know if folks stare at me or not, what I care about is the asshats in their cars seeing me. They can stare at me if they want though...

My wife won't let me out of the house for a ride unless I'm wearing some sort of neon colored shirt. Once I get going and start gasping for air, I forget that I look like a clown and just concentrate on not having a coronary. I'm sure people stare, but maybe a couple of those people wouldn't have seen me if I'd been wearing a "cool" kit. Of course, they may be staring at the propeller on my helmet, too.

Yeah people stare but it's not really me they are looking at, it's the smoke coming off the tires as I accelerate and drift through the turns.
