The Wheel
Little bit harder, just a little bit more,
A little bit further than you gone before.
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.

2004 Marin Bikes moved to the old Grateful Dead building in Novato, taking over its 32,000sq ft office and warehouse space. The actual Dead recording studio remains operational until late 2007, with surviving band members and other area musicians rolling though the facilities.

We can run,
But we can't hide from it.
Of all possible worlds,
We only got one:
We gotta ride on it.
But we can't hide from it.
Of all possible worlds,
We only got one:
We gotta ride on it.

Here is a photo from a ride I took with Bob in 1992. This is all in my book, Fat Tire Flyer: Repack and the Birth of Mountain Biking.

Ha! Just today I posted a ride on Strava which I named "Nothing Shakin' on Shakedown Street"! I'm not a Dead fan, per se, though I am and admirer, and enjoyed a couple of shows back in the late '80s/early '90s. One was the classic "bad trip," face down in the muddy field, until I heard the faraway twang of Smokestack Lightning to bring me back to Earth in a less literal sense...

I bought a nifty little handlebar mounted bluetooth speaker so I can listen to the Dead on Sirius while I ride.
I don't like the fit/feel of headphones and I believe them to be considerably more dangerous as they limit my ability to hear surrounding noise (specifically vehicles approaching from behind)
The speaker does not.

Looked up their top 10 songs, and the only one I recognize is "Touch Of Grey."
Although there is no better music than the 70's and 80's, give me some Boston, Eagles, Led Zep, AC/DC, Heart, and Seger.

You of course weren't implying that certain bands are better or worse dependent on the amount of top ten hits they recorded though right?
If that were the case I shudder to think who will be considered an all time great based upon recent top ten lists.

Oh no, no. I was just saying I was curious at what they sang, so I looked up the 10 most popular 'Dead songs and I could only recognize one by listening. I aways kinda wondered about their music, but just never found the time to research it. Obviously, I never got into them.

LOL... OK.
The Eagles had probably the most talented ensemble of musicians of any band ...ever. It's a cryin' shame they couldn't have stopped fighting among themselves to have realized their full potential. Henley and Frey were known as the vocalists of the group, but Randy Meisner was actually the most talented. His shyness of the spotlight, lack of self-confidence and anxiety issues prevented him from "soaring like an eagle." Talent wise, he could've been one of the greats of all time.

I have a feeling I'm a bit younger than most of the folks posting in this thread. Nirvana, Jack White, Radiohead are my bands of choice.

The ultimate irony: Cycling, while listening to the music of a guy (Garcia) who was obese; diabetic; drug-addicted; and a heavy smoker!

Yeah, but I don't listen to those guys singing, nor even think about them, or have anything to do with them. They're as far removed from my world and my cycling, as the rock 'n rollers are. (And although Eddy smoked, I doubt that he smoked heavily. Heck, stopping for a cigarett break on a ride would actually be pretty nice!)

I was a rock band roadie in the Bay Area, starting in 1968. Worked on a bunch of shows with The Dead, I've smoked a joint with Jerry Garcia, Phil and Bobby remain personal friends. Because someone listed bands from my era that they liked, here are some of the bands who played on shows that I worked on.
Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller, The Byrds, Credence, Chambers Brothers, Taj Mahal, Santana, The Eagles, The Band, Leon Russell, Average White Band, Three Dog Night, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Huey Lewis and the News, Doobie Brothers, Merle Haggard, Sly and the Family Stone, Canned Heat Quicksilver Messenger Service, Van Morrison, Donovan, Butterfield Blues Band, Ike and Tina Turner, Albert King, Everly Brothers, Ten Years After, Buddy Guy, Marshall Tucker Band, Lynerd Skynyrd, Chuck Berry Journey, and those are just the ones you've heard of.
I went to a lot of great shows.

And the fact that another member of the Grateful Dead mountain biked and is referenced in a book by a well known member of the original mountain biking scene escaped you?...
