Is there a brand of bicycle that is so "uncool" to you, that you don't consider them?

Surly-- These are not cool because they sell this manufactured, pre-packaged "alt lifestyle" aesthetic which has made it a standard bike for a certain crowd, a fact which is, to me, the antithesis of cool. Cool is original, it's unique...on an individual level. I don't want someone to look at my bike brand and think they know stuff about me, but I know a lot of Surly riders buy those bikes precisely to stake out their claim in the anti-establishment camp in a demonstrative way. But, while "that" (one, unique thing) can be cool, "those" (group of the same thing) cannot.
By this logic, I will not buy a Specialized, because it's the go-to bike for people that want to "pay-to-play". Sure, the S-Works isn't a bad bike, but I see too many D-bags riding these bikes, it has made Specialized uncool and unridable to me.
(I do have a Globe, made by Specialized, I won it ... and comically, I had a guy on a Specialized road bike talk smack about this bike while at a spotlight)

I'd say Huffy if I didn't have one... I garbage-picked a like-new Huffy MTB that only needed new tires, otherwise, it looks new!! I use that as a 'corner store' bike. Meaning I only ride it to the corner store.
For riding to the store two miles away, I'll use the 'Mutt' or the Schwinn Woodlands, because either of those beaters are so ugly, nobody would want to seal them anyway. I still haven't figured out what the Mutt's lineage is, but I'm leaning to a Raleigh of some sorts...

I thought that way, also. Got a wimmen's 7d for my wife out of frustrated necessity. A month later I bought a men's 21d for myself. It's kept me on a bike during winter weather and it's a great putter about and errand runner.

Modern Cinelli - Paying a ridiculous price for a
non Italian built frame, for
vanity.
Trek - The G.M. of the cycling industry. Buying
up companies (Bontrager, Gary Fisher,
LeMond, Klein, etc.) & run them in the
ground. Also, the clueless public view
Trek as top shelf, the end all & be all
bicycle.
Schwinn - The Varsity. A turd so infamous
it casts a shadow over their only
bike worth mentioning, the
Paramount.
70's boom bikes - 40lbs of gas pipe, steel rim,
pie plate, turkey lever, stem
shift, & bomb proof. For the
low price of $250 on CL.

As a person that lives in QBP's home town (parent company of Surly) and the owner of a Surly. I will defend the Surly owners. I did not buy a Surly Pugsley for the "alt lifestyle", I bought it because it's the classic. My riding buddy didn't buy a LHT to be anti-establishment, he bought it cause nobody made bikes with the same features he wanted for commuting and touring. Another friend bought a Big Dummy so he could ride with his young daughter and pick up groceries. Sure some people buy the "alt lifestyle" bike.

Depends on the bike. In the '70s I rescued a Sears Free Spirit, which I believe was actually a Puch, or Sachs (Austrian?). It was certainly not a top-end bike, but decent enough, all around. It lasted for years, then I gave it to my younger brother. I didn't know anything about bikes at the time, other than I liked to ride, and that one said "Made in Austria" somewhere on it, so I guess I got lucky. I don't automatically dis any bike--- Huffy and Murray team racing bikes were made by Serotta, even though they say "Huffy" and "Murray" on the bike. Actually, one of those would be a cool find. I DO tend to laugh inside at high end bike snobs who laugh at low cost bikes--- I've seen those very guys get dropped on level trails by kids on dual suspension "Next" Wally World tanks. (It has happened to me, on my Kamra--- I got passed by a young guy on a Western Flyer single speed on the W&OD trail outside DC. Maybe he was tweaking...) Sure a better bike will make a good rider faster, but I think we all ride what we can afford.

Behold the glory, power, and superiority of the Trek Madone! Now look away, you are no worthy enough to bask in it's awesomeness.
I don't know why people hate these so much, they really are great bikes. Of course, I'm selling mine because I never ride it, but it is great. I just have no taste in bikes and pretty much prefer every other bike I own for use on my rough chipseal roads. Now if only it was steel! LOL!

Totally kidding of course (sorta...) but if you slammed one of my steel rides like that it would be on!

But since I don't race, or pretend to, its supposed liabilities are actually advantages in comfort and reliability.

Oh yeah. I mentioned Cipollini, but I forgot to mention Cervelo. Cervello (double L) in Italian means brain. Couldn't ride a 'brain' bike, especially not one with a forever-typo in it.

Only problem with the leopardskin bike is the mismatched colors on the wheels. Should have stayed with the leopard theme.

I think it is laughable that just because someone owns a Surly that they fall into a certain "niche' look and secret society. Or think that's the case. What a load of BS. Surlys are becoming as numbered as Trek. All I read about in touring forums is the LHT, like there is nothing else. If anything, buying a Surly just shows a lack of individuality and a desire to be like everyone else. They are boring looking, trendy bikes that have over priced welded frames..nothing special in my opinion. And I certainly don't feel special riding one.. no more than a comparable Schwinn, Specialized or Trek. But it amazes me the $$ length some will go to keep their egos intact. Or think they are..

Heh, The marketing machinery has made fools out of many here it seems.
Funny that most who post in this thread have the makes and models of the bikes they own listed in their profiles for everyone to see.
There was a thread about that too.
