Personal Best Ride Today

Just shy of 70 miles, not bad for a guy pushing 50 on a 40 pound hybrid. Stopped after the first 9 for a Gatorade, then rode 29 straight, stopped for a drink, then to Gulfport for another drink, then downtown St. Pete for lunch, then rode the long way home. I think I can eat a whole pint of Ben & Jerry's tonight with no guilt.

Well done. I'm still shooting to ride my age, 58 miles before the end of August. After a long break from cycling I resumed riding at the end of August last year. Made it only a mile before collapsing. Now I can manage 20-40 mile rides a couple of times a week, along with shorter rides a few times a week. So even at my loafing pace of 12 mph, 58 miles is feasible. Not sure I can handle a century until my average speed improves, otherwise it'd be a 24 hour long ride.

Well I had to cross 7 overpasses and 3 draw bridges lol. . Yes it's nice and flat here, just a couple feet above sea level, but my god is it hot, went through 4 - 25oz water bottles, and the other drinks I had when I stopped. I can't wait for cooler weather, then I'm going for a century.

Great ride! I did several 70+ milers before finally doing my first century (at 53 years old) and they definitely got me ready for the 100 miles.

This month may be perfect for the Hotter 'n' Hell Hundred, because the second half of August has been unusually cool following a hotter than average start. If the weather holds the current pattern it'll be below 100F all day. But I'm aiming for next year. I'm not sure I could handle more than the 100k or 60 mile course. We'll see how my riding goes this week on the new-to-me road bike, which is lighter than the 35 lb hybrid I've been riding to get back into shape.

Pick good weather, hydrate, pick a good route, pace yourself and just do it! You will be surprised.
I'll bet on a 35 to 40 mile ride, you are on a plateau that will carry you well into the 50s.
Just pace yourself, pick the best gears, and you got it!

The high on Saturday is only 90 degrees, should be relatively tame.
The most effective thing that got me over 50 miles was speed work. Three interval sessions, an hour or so each, a week plus one long ride really did the trick.

I don't know where in SoCal you are, but back when I lived in SoCal we went out to the desert. Out past Palmdale. Between there and Rosamond, lots of flat straight roads that go (used to at least) pretty much nowhere.

I've got plenty of summer heat here to go along with the hills-- our next day with a forecast high under 90º is on October 2nd. What I need is some sort of magical Narnia-esque place to go, where the roads are smooth, flat, and goathead free, and it's 75º all the time.
We do have an almost complete lack of humidity, so I've got that going for me at least.
