It's the Engine not the Steed

I picked up a Schwann Super Sport '72, as old as I am. It has wider tires than my Trek and no clip pedals, it might be about the same weight. Taking it out today speed wise I rode the SS as fast as the Trek. I'm assuming it's because the engine isn't that great and not that various components and geometry are cancelling each other out.

1983 Waterford Paramount, 2013 Giant Propel Advanced SL .......Same wheels and same weight (have to add a little to the Giant to match the Paramount) I am faster on the Giant on same roads, same conditions time and again. PERIOD

There was a recent thread on this. Modern bike was faster in most cases but most people felt that was due to the brifters on the modern bike.

I suspect there's a lot of variables including stop signs and traffic on some routes. But it's fun to compare bikes especially before and after swapping out components.

Does anything matter in the end?

It's fun to compare.

Yes because we all know that the faster you are, the more fun you are to hang out with.
