I was questioning the spelling but obviously in this forum "lance" is a common lol

You guys know Fred Moser?

All my bikes carry a winter bag for peeling layers. Like today. Upper 40s, windy and chilly in the morning, 70s and still in the afternoon.

I actually was!(What an opportunity for a play on words, thought I!) I had even attached a "A Walter Lantz production" image, with a pic of Woody Woodpecker...but it somehow disappeared.....

The bag, though .... I hate messing up the lines of some of my bikes with add-ons and carry-alls, but when conditions dictate that the ride must start in different clothing than in which it will end ....
Sounds like Florida "winter" weather ... I used to live in and around Orlando (Mouse Town.) Great weather, but particularly for very early morning or night rides, and extra layer was absolutely needed at the start ... and a danger after the first 20 minutes, because excessive seating in 40-degree weather is sort of a health hazard ...
I always preferred a trunk or panniers, but the front bag has its own aesthetic ... that high-tech robo-cop laser underneath it, spoils the look. You need a couple brass-and-glass gaslights.
Oh, and those bottle cages are too slick ... sweet little detail I never noticed until you posted this picture.

it will be coming off in summer.
But for both for me and my daughter on winter rides, having a place to stuff wind shell, insulation layer, knee socks and bring along shorty socks improves the day.
Moser is like Italy's Lance without the drugs

It would be even more wrong on this bike.

The cages are VO Moderniste, which I have on two bikes. Some people deride these for flimsy, but I haven't had a problem with them. King Cage makes their bulletproof version in the same shape.

...and I won't see none of 'em today, because it's raining in SoCal. Those dudes don't ride in rain. Or wind, or excessive heat/cold, or even if the ground is just kinda wet. My ride is guaranteed to be poseur-free.

IMO, "Freds" don't obsess over showing off boutique brand bicycling gear; most if not all probably don't even know the brand name of the bicycle accessories on their bicycle, let alone the first name of the artisan who fashioned them into stylish objets d'art.

it's completely about function - it accomplishes winter storage and light mount together on a bike with no other place to get it done.
it was posted as a pun for Maeloch's benefit.
If it makes you feel any better, I don't want to know your first name.
Ely is a good guy who makes great effort, and I'll refer him anywhere I can.

And, what of the generational aspects of Fred-dom? I gather that most guys (and gals) my age and younger seem to be popping off the assembly line as Freds for the most part. I'm of the spandexed but, then, due to my somewhat unusual upbringing I've always been out of step with my own generation and have always related better to older people. There was all that talk in another thread of cycling being the new golf. I suspect that there are economic reasons for this trend, which I think is an accurate observation notwithstanding the fact that racers, of course, tend to be young and racing seems to be thriving.

Clearly using your fresh self as "bait" for Lycra packs and turning off before they catch you isn't Fred behavior. A Fred won't even notice them behind him as he pedaled away in front of them and never looked back...
Fred's have been known to parallel pace a Doris they come up on and start a conversation. I guess that's a kind of fishing.

The fishing equivalent of a Fred uses a fiberglass fly rod and is described in detail in John Gierach's humorous essay, "Bugs"

I've seen a bunch of those on the grass at Irvine park here in Orange County CA. The blossom style hats without the flowers were rampant!
