which crank set?

hello

i recently bent my front crank on the large cog, im currently in the process of bending it back but i was thinking of doing a revamp on my whole gears, its a 7 speed bike with this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...A3OITWRDM9TOMM crank set, is there an upgrade to it without blowing the budget, the guy at the LBS said off set was important but as its my first time replacing a crank i was curious as to the difference in them

The item you're linking to is a triple with a 170mm crank arm length. Do you currently have a triple? It's square taper. Is that compatible with your BB? What is the crank arm length on your current setup?

Wow, is that a CHEAP crankset! Holy cow-hope it lasts you at least a couple of months before the welds break......

cranksets

Hi,

Not sure what that crankset is in the shimano line (FC-M311 is altus, so fc-m151). Replaced my crank with the FC-M311 last year as the chain was jumping off, no issues ever since. As far as I can tell, Altus is very reliable, and only a few bucks more than the fc-m151. The gearing is kind of high on that crank in your link, what are you using the bike for? Thanks,

Dave

Go to your local bike co-op. You'll see stuff like that that has been ridden to death. That crank would probably outlast me and you both. Cheap, components don't always work great but its amazing how long some of it lasts.

I just received a new $30 MTB triple crankset from eBay. Thing is far more solid than the cheapish stamped crank that it is replacing that lasted 20 years. Also looks nicer and is more solid than the SR Suntour triple on my fiancee's Specialized hybrid.

If you bent the chainring, and that chainring is bolted on instead of riveted, you can replace just the ring.

If that's your current crankset, you can replace it with the same model. (Contrary to one person's opinion above, those steel-ringed inexpensive Shimano cranksets are really durable. Heavy, but durable.) If you replace your crankset with the same model, you know it'll work with your existing bottom bracket's spindle length. Shimano's great at marking their parts, so you can confirm the model and crank arm length by looking on the back side of the crank arm.

Square taper cranksets are made with a particular bottom bracket spindle length in mind, and there have been lots of spindle lengths used by different manufacturers at different times. If your bottom bracket spindle is too long, your chainrings will be too far outboard. Your derailleur may not be able to reach the big ring. If your spindle is too short, the chainrings could be too far inboard. The derailleur might not be able to reach the small ring.

Take it to your shop, let them fix it and pay whatever it costs. Did you bend the crank arm, or just the chainring?
