pumping up a tire
I have an Eclipse hybrid. I have the correct pump . The valves are odd as you know. I have not ridden the bike in almost 8 years .... and am having problems pumping up the rear tire.
I know in the valve stem you can turn out or in part of the valve. Seems whatever i did on the front tire which pumped up easily enough .... i am not able to replicate.
Please help. Thanks. Mark

if you have a presta valve, this video might help. but I understand that sometimes, these valves can break. do you have a bike shop nearby?

Just a thought... you say the front is pumped up and you did it-- work with that: let some air out, hook it up and refill. After playing around with the front you should know how the rear should work.

Unscrew .... the same way everything unscrerws .... when the screwable part is all the way up, it is ready to pump.

Presta valves sometimes break if the user puts a lot of pressure on the valve from the side. It's easier to do if you are using a hand pump. If you cradle the head of the pump in your hand while you wrap fingers around the adjacent spokes you will avoid this problem. Also be sure to pull the pump head straight up and off the valve. The previous answers were correct. You have to unscrew the tip on the valve so about 1/8" of the inner part is exposed. Push in on the tip only if you can't inflate the tube as it will lose some air already in the tube. Most of the time the tube will inflate without pushing on the tip.

Just a thought, but why not bite the bullet and plunk down $6 for a new tube? Assuming you have a gummed up Presta valve this is a simple and cheap way to fix it.

Yup, after loosening the tiny little nut a few turns, push it in with your finger to make sure it's loose.
