Human vision does not work the way you think it does. A cheap, 35 lumen LED light will barely appear to be lit at all in broad daylight. It will be visible from hundreds of yards at night. This is obvious to anyone who's ever turned on a cheap flashlight outside.

High-visibility retroreflective clothing is more effective during the day than low-output lighting.

They are thinking only of how much crack or meth they can get for the 1 dollar they can sell it for.

Think about this thread title for a minute... Do bike light thieves ever consider human safety in their actions? Since when has a thief ever considered anyone but themselves when stealing something?

Not even their own. I once responded to a call where a thief had tried to steal copper contact plates from a power transformer thingy of some sort. There was little left but bones, a little blackened flesh, and some melted metal buttons and a belt buckle.

People steal stuff for a myriad of reasons. If they are stealing things in anything but a very exceptional situation, no, they have no regard for your wellbeing.

There are enough street lights in cities that I don't need lights to see, I need them to be seen. Little blinkies work just fine in such a situation.

Yeah, you need more light to be visible in the day than the night.

Bingo. Even cheap blinkies are plenty visible at night. Might not do much to give you visibility, but as a marker for a bike, they work.

Maybe they were just thinking they needed to get home because someone stole their lights...

In the USMC, we had a nice way of dealing with theives when caught. They would have a nice late night "chat" with the platoon, and be medically discharged usually later that year.

A couple years back I took the extra effort of hiding my bike lights in a bush next to my bike... either someone saw me do it or they had some kind of xray vision... out $60 in lights and rode 4 miles home at bar close in the dark

I just don't like to have them in my pockets at the bar... still don't have a great solution for this problem.

Had a headlight and tail light withe the combined value of $150 dissapear off my bike and my 2012 DB Response from my "pile," one day. So so pissed. I forgot to take them off when I got home a few days prior. The tail light was dope, it had amber sidemarker leds.

Thieves only consider their own safety (from getting caught).

If it was battery powered, it would make for a cheap flashlight. If it was pawned off, it would get the person enough money for a 355ml can of beer or chocolate bar, or small sack of chips.
