Well it took him some time to break that lock, and in a totally obtrusive manner. If you are going to be obvious then just get explosive bolt cutters and cut through any chain instantly. It is not that noisy and would be less noticeable than someone sitting there with a wrench for 2 minutes.

I love the responses of "all locks can be defeated". It's as if the message you are sending is why bother

if someone asked what the safest automobile was, would you respond, "you can be killed in all cars".

obviously the OP is asking. Have you used this lock? Is it reasonably good? Do you have other suggestions?

If that lock picking lawyer guy had done a real life video where he locked up a bike using that lock in public that would be cool but sitting at home taking your time and having plenty of tools to get the lock ready to defeat and make it easier to defeat is not. The lock (which he bought used with no key or packaging) was defeated after he had removed part of the lock (which wasn't shown), using a tool (which isn't common) in the comfort of his own home in a vice but it took some time and ended up with part of that lock flying towards his face. I am all for testing locks and trying to break into them in labs and test situations but saying a lock is no good because it was defeated unrealistically isn't as good. We need this testing so companies can further improve their products and we can do better with our security and now more about our locks strengths and weaknesses.

Any lock can be defeated at some point using some amount of tools and what not but your goal is not to have a completely theft resistant lock but to have the most theft resistant lock in the bunch. Make your bike look as intimidating as possible to thieves so they move on to the easier bike. Most bike thieves want something easy especially in the day time in public. The more time you spend trying to get a bike the more risk you take and the more like it is you will get caught. If saw a bike with that folding lock and a bike with a say a cheap u-lock or a cable guess which bike I would rather go for?

Because not everyone on the street is a pro bike thief. Often times theft just happens because of opportunity. Its also a warning against becoming complacent. Nobody is implying locks don't work. In fact they most certainly deter theft, but it won't stop a determined thief.

Bike thieves get to spend all day coming up with ways to defeat your security measures. So vigilance should always be our attitude. That's the true message you should have taken from all this.
You should have stuck with car theft. Some are much easier to steal -- and more desirable -- than others. Actually we don't. Most people don't think much about it (I certainly didn't), and don't have a clue about lock quality until after they've become a victim. Just consider burglaries.

As for the recommendation, the choice the TS made was a good one. Rated at the top of the list in quality. At least it was at the time I bought mine. I have the Forgetaboutit mini.

In my opinion,there isn't a better lock for the money. I have four of the NY mini's and seven other Kryptonites and assorted Krypto cables and the NY locks give me the best piece of mind. I did go out and purchase the ABUS Bordo Granite X 6500 today. I bought two of them and they were around $225 Canadian each. I bought them to lock my Brompton folding bikes when I travel and where I need the extra length and width. I am confident that you will be quite happy with your purchase especially in Cochrane.

I bought Abus Granit X-Plus 540 Lock for my $3k road bike to lock up in a locked bike room at work. I purchased a Kryptonite EVOLUTION SERIES 4 1090 INTEGRATED CHAIN for my old 2003 road bike to lock up in relatively busy areas when I bike to do errands on the weekend.

I've seen what happens to the bikes that are left overnight locked up at the train station. Seats and unlocked wheels will disappear. I suspect some of this is due to the homeless people looking for free parts to keep their bikes working.

If people are determined enough and skilled enough, they can steal anything. It's about understanding the risks.

I have Kryptonite New York lock and I would highly recommend this lock. Beware it is heavy a little over 2 Kg.
