Choosing handle bar extender

My OLD Schwinn Mesa Runner needs a handle bar extender but apparently there are different diameters avail. How can correct size be determined without taking it into a bike shop ? I looked for "specs" online without success. Thanx.

Id /od

Ex tending how ? raising the stem? they're called (...wait for it...) stem raisers

So can you measure ? it seems a lost idea..

1" outside diameter threaded forks can be , inside , either 0.883" / 21.15mm,.. US or Japan (for US markets)

or 7/8" 22.2mm _ quill stem spec , matches the fork ID

[1" ID forks both threaded and threadless, are 1 1/8" outside .. threadless the stem clamps around the fork, threaded it goes inside.. ]

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Spend a couple bucks on a vernier caliper at Harbor Freight or some such place, and measure what you have.
