Mountain lion attacks (on humans, obviously) have historically been rare. In the last several decades there have been 1 or 2 per decade on average. A Colorado trail runner was attacked Monday, you've probably heard of this, he strangled the cougar. This is the third attack in less than 12 months.

Soon we'll all need medieval armor and sacrificial dogs just to go outside.

I'm not justifying what happened by any means, but, given that the only really safe place for the big cats, and lots of other species, to live is the zoo, You must realise how much of their environment, not to mentions their species, we have destroyed through wilful destruction of their habitat.

3 attacks is probably co-incidence, and no more. Horrible for the friends and family, with whom we all sympathise, but surely road deaths, murders, falls, drowning etc far outweigh the numbers killed by these animaks. I'd also note that hunters alone still kill animals of many species, whether they are 'protected' or not.

I know if you're ever involved in a mountain lion attack the correct response is to scratch behind its ears and open a can of food. But I guess telepathy works too.

I'm so desperate I'd actually welcome a cougar attack--as long as she's rich and generous.

yeah saw that, he was lucky it wasn't bigger. cats are wild, the way they twist & squirm. I've tangled w house cats & it's nothing I'd ever want a part of. I mean their back legs start kicking & digging, they'll do anything & everything to get away from a hold. very hard to imagine someone doing this successfully. would like to hear the jogger's first hand account

Read somewhere that it was a juvenile, about 80lbs. Still not an encounter I'd want to be a part of.

Usually, they tend to go after children and smaller women that are running. I was always taught to get BIG, move slowly, and throw stuff - and generally avoid running around dawn and dusk! Mountain lions were not uncommon in Boulder when I lived there ~15 years ago.

Yep. And/or wave a big stick/branch around. Like you wrote, anything to make you look larger than you are. Definitely don't tour your back and run.

We've had one prawling around our house recently. Kind of makes me wonder what I would do if one of dogs or kids gets ambushed. The guy is somewhat bad-ass, almost like those guys who ride their bikes in the rain.
