Wheel sizes

Hi,
My husbands back wheel is ruined! the bike is a 90's Schwinn criss cross. The tire size is 28x1.25. I want to replace the wheel, but don't want to spend a fortune on an old bike. Is 28 inch wheel the same as 700c?

Probably. The 1992 Schwinn catalog says 700C. Just to be sure, look at the tire and see if it is marked with “622” or “630”. If it is 622, it is a 700C. If the tire is a 630, it is a 27”.

You’ll also need to know the width of the frame. Measure between the dropouts as best you can. It would be best if you use a metric ruler. It may be 135mm or 130mm. 135mm is 5.315” or 5 3/16”. 130mm is 5.118” or about 5 7/64”.

My 90's CrossCut which I picked up as a frame fit 135 mm XT hubs without having to force. It could of been spread before I got it though.

I found a brand new 700c rim in my garage. It appears to be the same size as the ruined one. You tube showed me how to remove the free wheel. He hardly rides this bike, so giving it a try. Thanks for your help.
