I give up! I would have lost the bet that there were to be more "speeds" after they hit 11

It's inevitable, there being no real "performance improvements" for the basic road bike left to be had.

Also, who wants to bet a beer on how long until road bikes go 135? (Really, that should have happened 20 years ago. There was never any reason for two standards 5mm apart, one for road and one for MTB.)

At least we’re moving from colossally abundant to sexy prime. That’s gotta be progress, right?

As long as we have the ole snake eyes, we might be fixed for a while regarding progression.

I'll take that bet.

It happened silently with the move to disc brakes beginning in 2010 for the 2011 model year.

The majority of new road bikes use 12x142mm thru axles with 135mm between dropouts plus 3.5mm of inset for the end caps to slide into allowing thru axle wheels to self-center like traditional ones.

Drew hit the nail on the head.

Manufacturers aren't going to restandardize anything on rim brakes. Any new width standards are going to be on disc models, which will soon mean all models.

We'll still be stuck with 2-3 widths. 142 for road and I bet boost and wider is going to get more common and largely leave 142 on the road.

Don't forget 12, 15, 20 axle diameters.

What's the chance I'll be able get a 50mm through axle.
