It is designed by a former Dutch athlete, and to make it cool was exactly his intention. This is from their website:

In an attempt to increase safety and mutual respect among cyclists he came up with the idea of a bell that was so cool that people actually would like to have it. The HideMyBell concept was born.

I just buy the brass and plastic type at my local bike shop for about $7 and get a lot better results than “rider back or on your left” . I was riding home and used it when passing someone and when I stopped at a light she came up behind me and said that she was going to get a bell because she had some guy respond poorly to her when she yelled on your left when she passed him. I said he was probably just pissed that you passed him! LOL

Zombie thread alert...
Felt the need to get something after first basically harmless encounter with group of pedestrians since starting to ride again.
Simple slow down and a "sorry, thanks!" worked fine but got this for not much $, just as an extra precaution:

I've been using a cute bird shaped one because I thought my kid would enjoy it:

Pretty unhappy with it, though. If it rotates too far forward and touches a cable, it doesn't work. If you don't pull the handle all the way back before letting go it also doesn't work, bird's head stops before reaching the bell. I guess the spring is set to keep the head off the bell to prevent unwanted sound on bumps or something, so it has to overcome that.
Even worse, the bell slides around on the handlebar because the only spot I have free for it isn't a perfect cylinder (thus the zip tie trying to fix it in place horizontally).

Then you ring the bell and behold as the true magnificence is revealed; just one simple ping and a sphere of utter joy instantly grows around all within earshot as people turn to
point actually smiling in delight (even in London), the Sirens of mythology would change their tune if only they knew, the reception desk at the gates of heaven has one of
these. It resonates clear and long unlike any mere bicycle bell before ever dared to dream, I have found myself going down to the bike shed late at night just to check it wasn’t
my imagination before climbing into bed with an inane grin then falling into a content deep slumber.
Yes you could buy cheaper or neater but surely you would missing out on this sonorous brass bliss ?
