I once rode 6,000 miles on tour one summer without a cell phone and the internet. The following year I did two 7 week, solo tours without one. Never needed a rescue.

As my iPhone 6S grows older and less current (haha) I find that it discharges ever faster with each new OS release, which I personally feel is dishonorable on Apple's part.

Maybe he'll show it to us right after explaining how he knows how far this irresponsible cyclist had walked and was going to walk.

SRAM DD3 hub which is 3 speed IGH with a freehub so lets say we swap that for a 11 speed HG freehub and then add a Pinon P.18 at the front with a double chainring (probably using a fat bike front derailleur or something) and you have 1188 gears. However let's just be more realistic a Rohloff 14 speed IGH and Pinion P.18 is 252 gears and wouldn't be hard to do or skip the double at the front and use a mountain bike 11 speed cassette which can work on a 10 speed freehub and still you have a ridiculous amount of gears. Also Sun Race which own the Sturmey Archer name makes a similar hub but I don't think it handles 10 speeds and it not as nice as the DD3 but is still in production.

WAY BACK in early '80's I built up a BASSET RACING 45 speed cruiser. Triple front, SA 5spd internal rear with triple cog. Awesome high and low gears.

Half-kilted is even worse; you really don't want to draft someone wearing half a kilt.

It sucks that they had to walk their bike, but on the bright side at least they're not a ******bag.

You should be carrying more than one spare tube.

Some people don't like changing flat tires on the side of the road. He likely didn't "learn" anything, I don't carry stuff to fix flats on my bike and have walked home many times. If I fix a tire on the side of the road and it flats again it upsets me, but I usually dont mind walking a few miles

Many years ago I was up on Mount Pinos on a weekday. I flatted, unusual on the mtb, but my spare tube was bad or something. There was nobody around . I tried the old BS thing about stuffing weeds in there, and its BS. Ended up riding down on the rim. Encountered a lady walking her Llama and asked if she had any tubes, she didn't. Anyway, I could have walked out but it was faster to ride the rim.

Also did have to walk home when the frame broke on my old K2 but it was only a couple miles.

After forgetting my wallet and going to work low on gas I planned to borrow a few bucks before I left the job but I forgot. I figured I could make it the 30 miles home. I was wrong. I had to walk 7 miles and it sucked.

I crashed on the bike path at Marina Del Rey in 1988 and destroyed the front wheel, along with my shoulder. A guy was walking with his family and went and got his car and drove me to my car in Santa Monica. Nice man. I had a concussion and almost threw up driving back to the valley.

I broke a chain once two miles from the house. I don't know what they would have done for me, but a man and woman walking on the MUP asked if I needed help. Come to think of it, I didn't have anything on that bike to fix a flat with either. So even if they had a chain tool and a quick link, I didn't deserve their offer of help.

Out for a ride today on the bike trails. I meet up with a guy walking his $5000 bike, at least that much. He has a flat tire. He has no tools no spare tubes or patch kit. He had already walked 5 miles, and had 5 to go.

Maybe he didn't want to miss out on all the good dumpsters along the way.

That's the kind of irresponsibility that rydabent is talking about! Why weren't you carrying a spare bike frame?

Should have carried some JB Weld.

I ride with a full TIG welding setup. You never know when you'll need it.

Quesnel 08-22-22 08:03 PM

I just bike around the block..about 100 times a day..this way, I don't have far to walk if I break down

I watch towing and recovery videos on YT. This one dude has a welder on his truck. He drives way back in Moab and welds cars back together. It's surprising what he can do.

I had a flat in the middle of nowhere once. I tried to repair it but couldn't find the leak. So I put it back together and walked my bike to the subway station and rode it to the nearest bike shop where I purchased a new tube and installed it.

It was a long walk to the subway station.

Lots of boutique parts

Thats my point though none of my bikes look expensive yet they reached the $5k threshold

Carrying a spare bike would be lighter and lots of riders do it!:thumb:

Just a tube? After all that travelling, you could have purchased an entire new bike! That's one sure-fire way to deal with a flat tire.

I carry 2 tubes. The first one is the strike tube. The second one is the spare. I do better when I don't have to use the second tube.
