I was disappointed to learn that Clif Bar is discontinuing their Clif Shots, which have been filling up my jersey pockets for decades.
I guess that's what happens when a good company gets bought out by the corporation that makes Cadbury candies.
I just bought out the last of their mocha flavor from Clif Bar website.
Got any recommendations for other decent gels?

Clif Bars contain soy protein isolate a substance that is made from defatted soybean by a process that leaves it devoid of any nutritional value.
. Soy intake has also been linked to breast cancer
......... so a banana & almonds &or an apple is probably better

Looks like a zombie thread has been revived, and so, late to the party, I'll add my $0.02.
Chews vs. gels: I use both. I like chews better because they aren't as messy, they are more pleasant to eat, and I can titrate different amounts depending on need or mood. Nobody in their right mind ever eats half a gel and puts the rest back in their pocket. Yuck. But I also carry gels for a few reasons, including having some variety, they come with more caffeine (some of them do, anyway), and chews get hard and difficult to manage in my mouth when they are cold.
I wish there was a way to dispense the gels without getting my hands sticky.
Brands: For gels, I prefer Hammer Espresso. 50 mg of caffeine. A little shot of sweet coffee and I'm rock and rolling.... For chews, Probar Bolt. gluten free (I'm celiac...) and tasty. I think the Clif Shot Bloks are also GF, but I the Probars taste better IMHO.

I'm sorry the Clif Shots have gone away. The Double Expresso variety, with 100mg caffeine, are great for bike-overnites, when I don't want to pack any equipment for making coffee. I down the contents of one pouch before heading out on the return and I am good to go.

If you've ever been in a plant that makes the base materials for these "heath" bar type things... you may never eat one again. I've spent some time in these converted dog food factories - yep, converted dog food factories - big ole slurry's of soy crap mixed with who knows what...
I've not tried the Cliff gels, but if I eat more than one bar on a long ride - stomach cramps are sure to follow.

The science and technology behind modern food ingredients is less than appetizing to be sure. Minnesota is a world center (home to General Mills, Cargill, ADM has a large presence, etc.).
OTOH, "converted dog food factories" is just needless dramatization. Even if true in a few cases, it doesn't really matter to the current production what the former use was. They all pass USDA inspection.
