Cycling as transportation is cheap. Cycling as a hobby is fairly expensive, and thus attracts generally wealthier-than-average individuals. This tends to map with higher education levels.

If a person uses the same bikes, clothing and gear for commuting as they use for recreational riding then the cost is the same for both. Not all people who ride for transportation use cheap bikes. cheap clothing and cheap gear.

Of course you can use cheap gear for recreational riding, or very expensive gear for commuting. As a general rule, though, if you just need to get around town the entry barrier for biking is lower than for a car, but if you're going to take it seriously as a hobby the cost, both in equipment and time, will go up very quickly relative to birdwatching, stamp collecting, or any number of other hobbies. It's also worth remembering that it takes, all things considered, a solidly above average income to even afford a hobby in the first place. Recreational sport, especially equipment-dependent endurance sports like cycling, is just not something that poor people can afford.

Y'all is redundant. It's trying to bring back functionality to the English language that has been lost.

The linguistics used in cycling are eurocentric. The introduction to cycling for most of us came by way of a "10 speed" european race bike. Made in England, France or Italy, these were the major bicycle manufacturing countries before the shift to asia. Terminology therefore originated from these countries. And since England and the U.S. share a common language the words we use discussing cycling are often derived from UK english. Seat/saddle, tires/tyres, sew-ups/ tubulars, racing wheels/sprints, jersey/jumper.

I used Super Champion Arc en ciel rims in my racing days. It was years later that I found out it meant... arch in sky...rainbow. As in world champion colors. And a sticker on the rim was a rainbow and I never realised the tanslation...duh

One of the odd ones that I find interesting is the french rapiere/rapier chainstay taper. Somewhere in translation it became rapid taper chainstays.

You could make the same argument about "youz guys" or many other colloquial terms. It's just a regional speech pattern. Like it or not, grammatically correct or not, it's been part of the vocabulary for a couple centuries and likely will continue for a couple more centuries.
