American Bikes
How many American Bikes Companies are there in the United States? Besides the frame, do they use foreign made components (Shimano, Campy, Suntour, etc)?
|
We went down this rabbit hole a little while ago.
I think you can get some frames and some components. Not a complete bike. |
American Bikes ?

That list does not include many small builders -
DeSalvo, Mischief, Tallerico to name 3. |

American Bikes
I'm guessing that a guy can't build a bike, from the frame up with all American Made Components. The Japanese can do it, the French can do it and the Italians can do it, but Americans can't. That's sad. :(

American companies as in North America, South America and Central America? Or just companies in the United States of America.

I'm gonna say, components made within the 50 United States of America. Why not ?

Crown Royal and others are moving plants and operations to the US because of the T word. Hang in there and you may get your All American Bike.
I have dual citizenship, so cheering for both teams is permitted. |

My frame, hubs, headset, stem, and seat post were made here. That is all.

Interesting idea. While I would love to buy an all American made bike, I realize that's a near impossibility today. I do appreciate Destin Sandlin's Smarter Every Day Youtube channel and he recently did a video on a project to make an all American grill scrubber. The most interesting, and to my mind, frightening point he made is that, in America today, we no longer "make the things that make the things". Not having the infrastructure to create the tooling needed to be a manufacturing nation puts us at a huge disadvantage, and I find it quite concerning. Even more concerning is where we have allowed all that capacity to migrate.
But back to the original subject, I would love to see someone in the US able to build a market competitive bike. Don't see it happening, but I would still love it. |

Asian manufacturers can do it better, more efficient and for a better price. It's been that way for a long time with bikes, cars, electronics and many other consumer products.. All the major bike brands and components are manufactured in Asian countries. Another thing you need to consider is that not everyone who posts on these forums is an American or has a desire to purchase products made in USA.

My (custom steel) bike was build in my zip code. The hubs, headset and a few other things were made in Portland, OR by Chris King. The wheel rims are HED, made in Minnesota and assembled at Chris King. The fork was made by Enve, with the claim it was made in Utah (but there is some ambiguity). Same with the seatpost, etc. The saddle was made In Birmingham, UK. The Shimano drivetrain and brakes were made in Japan and Maylasia. At one point I had a White Industries crankset on it, which is made in Marin Co, California. My tires were made in Japan, having been specced and then shipped from Seattle by a German guy called Jan.
