I really enjoy riding my trek crossrip ellite. It's jack of all trades bike, and it is reasonably priced. I would not buy something with really skinny tires, because they are more difficult to ride.

The only thing that makes me hesitate on the Via that some of the other options I have looked at have had more than it's 8 gears. Portland is pretty flat, and it will probably do for me just fine...Probably?
It's the only steel frame of the lot, and I know that's more comfortable over distance because it's less rigid, but is that likely to even be a problem on what's likely to only be a commute of 6 miles round trip and 10-15 on the weekends?
