I knew it was cold today, colder than the teens we have been having, but it didn't really hit me until I realized my riding glasses were frozen to my eyebrows. It was right about -13 F with the windchill, and even though I had a good thick layer of FaceStick (like Chapstick) over everything my balaclava did not cover, my nose still got iced up. I guess this means tomorrow I'll have to add yet another bulky layer to my head to keep things from falling off in frozen hunks. Rhinoplasty is not an option.

Just another thing for the fringe urologists to warn us about.

It was -20 F (ambient) and -35 w/the winchill yesterday. Today it warmed up to 0 ambient and -20 w/the wind! Time to plug in the cars!

I've been reading about the Tour Down under and right now, they're riding a stage in temps of 41C- that's about 110f. Of course, it's a DRY heat. BUt then, so's hell!

The best thing to do is watch videos from last year's TDF or other races that took place during hot weather, like the NYC race, or the Tour De Suisse.

I've ridden in temps of 40C with dry heat before. It's not that bad. In fact, it's probably more comfortable than 25C and humid.

Been there done that. So happy not to have to do it anymore.

...the lead story on CNN is about the weather conditions in your home town. The wind chill today is in the single digits. This will be my first four day lay off since I started riding in October. It's a good thing I was off on Monday and got a good ride in or else my miles for this week would be pathetic.

you also know it's a cold one when the snow squeaks and squawks underfoot and the dogs tht usually delight in attacking your back tire are, like, "screw [that] --I'm not leaving this dogloo!"

Chris, actually 25 and humid is fine, for me anyways. I like warm weather, but when it's 34 and humid, ecccch. I agree, 40c and dry is probably a lot more bearable than that. Frankly, I'd love to be there right now!

As for dogs, how about when you take them for a walk on a really cold day and they start hobbling and limping and look up at you mournfully? The salt just eats away at their poor feet!

This morning when I left home it was 8F with the wind chill well below zero!

It was getting "kinda warm" when I went out for lunch. It was 29F, windchill 22F.


It's even too cold to wear shorts around the house.

I have to agree, I'd take 120F with no humidity over 90F with 50-80% humidity anyday..

as for winter, today it was 65F...
(careful on that snow guys)

Actually, I don't think you'd like it too much if there were no humidity Low humidity is great, but if you drop too low you start running into problems with sinus membranes drying out, and you can drink gallons of water and it won't help that problem a bit!

It's true, when it's very warm and dry, you really feel more thirsty and your lips get all dry, at least when it's damp or humid you absorb the moisture through your skin! I remember last year, it was extremely mild in december- not like this winter! One day, it was about 12 C, I think it was about the 10th or 11 of december, so that's really way above normal for that time of year. We went for a ride that day and it was really neat- very foggy, damp and warm with almost no wind. It was only foggy right near the water, but it was so cool. And because the air was so moist I hardly felt thirsty at all.

I don't know, I guess I'm just used to it, when I went to visit my uncle in chicago (and went riding) it was a different but it felt 'hotter' to me go figure However, when I ride here in vegas, (as long as you drink enough) I tend to tolerate the heat much better... although I have a friend, who rides in the middle of the day during the summer, his motto "the hotter the better" now that's nuts

I tend to find the opposite. Generally, if it's humid (like today ), I find myself drinking upwards of 10 litres of water/day just to stave off heat exhaustion (that applies whether or not I'm riding). I don't have this problem in the drier conditions.

Yeah, I guess everyone's different, I like warm humid weather, but really when it's real hot, I drink a lot no matter what.

Speaking of 'the hotter the better' we had a spell of brutally hot weather last summer, in july as usual- the Dog Days. During that time it was nuts to go out except really early or late in the day. A friend of ours decided to go for a long ride with a friend of his during one of those brutal days, and the air quality wasn't great so he spent the next few days coughing his head off. And he's often says he hates heat and humidity, go figure.
