Biking on the sidewalk

Bikes: 1 road bike (simple, light), 1 TT bike (could be more aero, could be lighter), 1 all-weather commuter and winter bike, 1 Monark 828E ergometer indoor bike
I use the sidewalk for about 40 ft along my commute. It's because a short stretch of bike lane I use ends in a sidewalk that then turns. To avoid having to drive out into a street with traffic crossing to turn right, I follow the sidewalk to turn.

I hate sidewalks in the denver metro area. My car vs bike incidents increase 10 fold.
That being said, I would never generalize and say never use the sidewalks. Just slow down and pay even more attention. I still have a 2 20 foot sections I can not replace. That would be 60 feet in 45 miles RT. Not that bad IMHO

If you're riding in a large city, there are tons of parking garages that open directly on the sidewalk and plenty of people who are in such a hurry to leave that they race out of those parking garage entrances only looking at the road, not the sidewalk. If your doing 15 mph on the sidewalk your easily going to either hit or get hit by one of those cars before you even know what happened.
