If I came back to my bike and found that the wheels, pedals, seat, derailleur, etc were gone, I wouldn't give a ***** about the grips.

well you said it was locked right? and it wasn't locked in that same place for several weeks? you just came upon it and saw it was pretty well stripped? what if the owner was really paranoid and took the pedals, wheels and seat? and left the grips because who steals grips? maybe it wasn't being robbed and wasn't abandoned. what if a kid came out holding 2 wheels and pedals and was like WTF?

www.propertyroom.com sells off a lot of abandoned and stolen > recovered > unclaimed bikes. most of them are unwanted, but every now and then theres a find. a friend of mine got a trek remedy in perfect condition for $217 i aint kidding, that's when i put that site in my favorites.

If anyone cares, the bike is still locked to the rail (with other bikes parked on top of it during classes, no less).
MOST people have posted legit replies that will make me think twice next time a similar situation presents itself.
However, I'm not returning the grips.

here at the University of Florida, we have a really big bike parking problem. They have lots of bike racks, but bikes are left over summer or something along those lines and parts are stripped off like you have said. While it is wrong, I am not really sure I have a problem with it like others do. What I really hate is the person who left the bike after seeing it had parts stolen. I can not ever find a spot to park my bike because 1 out of 10 spots are filled with junk bikes that have no tires or just a frame some times.

That said - what you could do is work with local police and get them to clean up some. What we do here is one a year we go out and cut locks of abandoned bikes. Then the police have an auction and kids can get a beater for $5-35. I even saw a really nice old lemond go for $25.

But yes – you are going to hell for bike grips!

Now you are beginning to understand the peace and love and progressive thought movenent. We all love each other so we all want each other to have the things they want/need. We are all peacefull so we will not defend our selves/property. We are all progressive so taking your bike/property/wealth is supporting the progressive theme of community of property.

That didn't equate theft with murder in any way. It equated one persons wrong action (could have been anything: murder, ****, battery, DUI, etc) with another's (in this case theft).

You obviously missed the point.

No not a good thing, eventhough this benefited you and you may think at the time it was the right thing to do. Anytime you take anything from anybody else without their consent is wrong and called stealing no matter what the worth the object is though.
