Butt lube
I know this sounds funny, but in a previous thread about long distance riding someone suggested lubing your butt so you don't get saddle-sore. Another person repeated this suggestion, this time using the term "rubbing butter on your butt".
Is this real? What do you mean? Do you actually rub butter on your ass? It seems to me that it would feel as though you had the runs, and didn't have enough time to make it to the bathroom. Is there a certain type of creme that is usefull?
I'm confused....

never used the stuff, but I've heard there's:
1) Bag Balm. "The original ointment for soothing chapped skin, small scrapes and cuts. Ideal for horses, cattle, pets or other domestic animals suffering from occasional skin irritations."
https://www.bagbalm.com/

2) and your Udder Butter. "Corona's easy-spreading, long-lasting antiseptic unguent for soothing and protecting raw, sore, painfully chapped or injured teats and udders. Special self-emulsifying action disperses ointment in warm wash water for easy clean-up. Keeps milker’s hands soft and smooth without chemical odor. Also an excellent hoof and body dressing."

(and as far as "butt lube," there's just too many fine products out there to list, so I'd recommend checking out your local library.

Other products include Udderly Smooth (I've seen it a Wal-Mart), and Chamois Butt'r, which is probably the "ultimate." You can also buy various udder creams (designed to protect and treat cow udders) at ag supply stores.
IMO, Bag Balm works quite well, but it's in a base of petroleum jelly. A little goes a long way, and it's persistent on long rides. It also doesn't easily wash out of shorts.
I use any of the above on long rides, or shorter vigorous rides. Butt lubes are only one of the weapons in the battle against saddle sores, but a useful one. Speaking for the male contingent, you apply it in the creases where your legs meet your crotch to prevent chafing. I also spread it on the area of my tokus (sp?) that contacts the saddle, and around my 'nards.

I use Bodyglide comes in a stick like deodorant.
Fast Facts First, saddle sores and chafing. Cyclists talk about soreness but don’t often go into details about the exact area of irritation - around the genitals. The chafing is caused by friction (rubbing) between the seat and the rider. Other products you may have used. Most products used for saddle sores need reapplication because they slide atop the skin, and as you are moving, the products migrate away from where you need protection. Most products require you to apply them (rub them on) with your hands, and then you need to wash your hands. If that is your experience, check the product ingredients. The product you have been using is likely to include mineral oil, petroleum, petrolatum, oil (of some kind), water or maybe alcohol. You will not find any of those ingredients in BODYGLIDE.
BODYGLIDE Apply BODYGLIDE to your skin, bike shorts or chamois. On your body, it penetrates your skin and stays where you need it. It’s non-oily. The product creates a barrier to guard against rubbing but it allows perspiration to be wicked away. BODYGLIDE will also help with irritation from chin straps and anything else that rubs your skin the wrong way.

Does anyone else worry what you may see when you open a thread called "Butt Lube" that has photos attached to it?

I don't know if it was my morbid sense of curiosity or just the time of night but I had to open it and take a chance.
I am relieved!

I have some "butt butter" myself that I picked up. Try that Bodyglide stuff. I see it for sale at a lot of the bike shops in town.
I also read in the Roadale internet newsletter for road riders that the guys were using hemmoroid ointment instead of the butt butter. They said it helped prevent saddle sores and chafing every time- and they were doing 80+ mile rides every day. Right after that, I picked up some Preparation H ointment. I guess it works, because that saddle sore went away, and I haven't had problems in the nether regions since!
Whew!

Modern detergents don't always wash out of clothing completely.
When mixed with sweat and vigorous movement, the irritation can be bad.
In addition to using skin protectants, try using half as much detergent and then re-wash clothing without using any soap. Use cold water on the second wash if you want to save money.

I recommend Assos Chamois Creme. It is Euro-good and has a little bit of witch hazel that makes it feel nice and tingly.
Just remember: no amount of butt lube can possibly make up for the irritation of underwear under lycra shorts!

Hi,
I don't know if this is ideal; it's just what I have been using. This is a product made right here in Maine, it's called Mad Gab's Elephant Lube.
It's made of....Olive Oil, Almond oil,Beeswax, Shea Butter, Vitamin E oil, and "other essential oils'. It is really soothing stuff.

What the heck is Shea butter?

He was just asking.....I see no evidence of "running for the comfort." He just wanted to know what the heck we are talking about, and if there is a specific creme...
