if your balls are getting squashed its not the seat's fault its your placements fault, (que picture of sickening bike team) Saddle comfort rarely has anyhting to do with softness, there is such thing as too hard, but too soft is easier to come by.

squishy seats are comfortable for 20 miles tops. After that everything gets pinched and your sit bones aren't doing the sitting... making for a hellacious experience. What you want is something ergonomic, not soft.

Here is an article with a lot of useful info about what to look for in a saddle.

I have two comfort style bike (GT and Diamondback). Both came with huge soft seats that were replaced quickly. I opted for a firmer seat for both, yet with a cut-out in the middle and a slightly gell type of cushion for under the boys.
To date, I have not had any problems and racked up over 1000 miles on these two bikes. I know some that pay a lot of money for seats and I was ready to do that as well, but decided to try a cheaper approach first (seats were about $20 each).
Good Luck.

I recommend what I saw one guy doing at the LBS a year or so ago. Taking each saddle off the wall rack and pushing them up against his butt.

To the OP,
While you might get some guidelines from others, when it comes down to it, a saddle is a personal choice. You are just going to have to try a few to find the right one. Try to work with a LBS or online store that is willing to allow you to return the saddle if you do not like it.
