I always found it amusing that these people think they are doing something good by taking the world's most biodegradable substance and wrapping it in the world's least biodegradable substance, and then they leave it at the side of the trail for what? The forest custodians to pick up?

3 years ago we found a pistol during a group ride. One of the guy was a cop and he stay with it until the local police showed up to investigate.
Nearly 30 years ago, before cell phones, I was on the other side of the continent, heading home on a fully loaded touring bike, when I saw what I *thought* was a kid's cap gun half buried in the sand in the middle of nowhere. Being an experienced shooter, I picked it up. It was too heavy; a reproduction cap & ball revolver. Loaded, except for an empty & unprimed chamber. A little beat up and rusty. I unloaded it safely, and sent it (NOT A MODERN FIREARM) from the next town, to a black powder expert, who cleaned it up and deemed it safe to shoot. It doesn't group worth a damn, but it's a great trip trophy. |
All I ever find is nailed and screws.
I pick them up anytime I see one, mostly out of self preservation because I drive my car on the same roads I ride on. But it does leave me wondering...how are all these nails and drywall screws in the road ALL THE TIME?! I understand bolts that might fall off or cars. But cars don't have nails or dry wall screws anywhere in them. So where are all these tire killed coming from? Who is riding around with loose nails and screws on the roof that fall into the road? And how come these same people never ride around with loose gold coins and such that I could find instead? |

Try giving them the benefit of the doubt: we used to do a lot of out-and-back trail hikes with our dog before we had to put her down (F**k Cancer), and we would often bag the poop on the way in, and pick it up on the way out, (same day), rather than carrying it for miles...or stinking up a pocket or backpack. Related...we left a bagged one next to our car once (don't want to stink up the car either), walking her before a vet visit. Some do-gooder picked up the "sample" we needed for the vet!
Carry it with you the whole time or don't bring the dog. People might have good intentions on picking it up on the way back but don't always remember. You can hang it in a double bag on the back or just carry it. And certainly don't blame someone for doing the right think cleaning up your mess. |
A friend of mine and I were descending from a mountain pass one day and he exclaimed, " I almost hit a turtle!" My wife has a soft spot in her heart for turtles and I like reptiles and amphibians in general, so I swung around and went back. Sure enough, it was a little snapping turtle about the size of a silver dollar. I noted the direction of travel and moved him across the road.
NOTE... If you see a turtle, terrapin or tortoise crossing the road, make sure that you move it to the side where it is going. They have a good sense of direction and are pretty bullheaded about getting where they want to be. |

Last August, I found a debit card on my local bike path, the kind you load up with cash and then use like a credit card. I dropped it off at a little bait shop where the shop keeper said two ladies had just stopped and reported it lost. Found them about 5 minutes away still looking, and sent them back.
If I find hats, I keep them. I've lost enough of my own. |
