Denver... sorry I didn't get a chance to reply to your question in time... In the future, the cookie file name is called...

Just wondering about the bikeforums team.. did everyone just sign up and start logging at that point from zero? Or did they enter in a bulk number to start with from history? I started from zero on there.. but I was thinking I could go enter some dummy data to collect the rest of data from the summer when I started riding again...

 for getting the site up and working again.. had a scrap piece of paper with last weeks riding history. :)

clintthayer 10-11-04 10:06 AM

The numbers get "reset" every year so you can either load up your data in a few adds, or just wait till next year.

With adding your older miles, try and do it by month... that would give you some stats by month for future reviewing.

Hi everyone...

Sorry to bug all that are tied to this thread but I thought it best to get this info out to as many users as I could... Please read the following...

During the move of the site... this thread will be the hub of info about the move. Come here to check on progress and ask questions.

Happy new years everyone!

PS - on a more happy note... my 5 month old daughter just rolled over from her back to her front... it's amazing how a real bad day can be turned right around by just a little girl!

Cheers everyone,
Clint

Awesome news about your girl Clint! I have a 9 month-old niece and I have an inkling of what you're going through. My wife and i hope to have one of our own in a year or so :)

As for the site, it's always nice to know you're on top of it. This really is a tremendous service and I think many will agree with me that we're more than happy to keep the financial support coming. Just let us know. I know you want the site to be free, but donations can use guidance sometimes too... :)

The move also brings up an issue I mentioned in the past but forgot to to follow up on. How about adding the ability for us to download our data in some kind of raw format? I assume you store everything in a database that could easily be exported as a comma-delimited file (or something else). not sure if setting up the ability to do that over the web is easy, but it would be a nice feature. We could keep personal backups so some of the responsibility is off your shoulders AND it would let those of us who are "Excel-savvy" manipulate the data for training purposes, etc.

As always, great job and keep up the good work! (And I must say that I thought your daughter's birth would slow you down enough for me to beat you. Aas, even with my 20-mile (planned) ride tomorrow, I'll fall just under 50 miles short. Hope I can rie that much when we have a baby... ;) )

Happy New Year! (and seriously, let us know when you need financial support. Like I said, many of us are willing to what's necessary to keep this site going...)

clintthayer 12-31-04 07:21 AM

Thanks Carl,

The excel option is not that tough. It was always my plan to give that option but it fell to the back burner. Once things get moved I'll put some time into the feature. We should have a ton more bandwidth with the new site so that should not be an issue. I seem to remember other sites that I used (prior to creating ActiveBody) had that feature. Thanks for jogging my memory!

The donations have helped and with the current hosting company, there was enough to pay through May of 2005. Once things get shut down, the pro-rated amount will be refunded and that will go to help pay for the new hosting costs (this includes setup). I suspect the leftover amout will cover a couple of months as the new cost will be about $50 a month, do the math and that is about $600 a year. My statement back in October when I had to go to a higher priced plan was that I would cover 50% and the users would have to come up with the other half. That means we need about $25 a month in donations to keep the site going. Like I said before... users have helped a great deal but I think at the rate we have been getting donations, we might need a few to step up and help out. To help communicate funding levels I'm going to be creating a page that lists total donated amounts so all the users can "check in" and see if things are going well. Plus I'm planning on having "pledge drives" a week or two out of the year if things get tight... I know it would bug people, but not much I can do at this point. So to answer your question... if you like the site, and want to keep it going... donate!

As for the daughter... man I can't tell you how much fun we are having. Ellie is such a fun kid to be around, words can't describe it. I knew I always wanted to be a parent, but I didn't know the deep joy it would bring to my (and my wifes) life. As she is getting older her personality is starting to shine through and it's a treat to watch. I had a little talk with her last night (as drool was dripping from her lip) that at some point in her life she was going to have to take over running this web site called activebody... so don't worry folks... I got the site covered for at least a good 50 or more years!

Good luck Carl... it will happen!

Miles, miles, miles... Kids do impact the biking for sure. I think I've gained about an extra 15 lbs and my form has gone to crap. I'm working hard every day with eating and getting on the trainer as well as biking in to work every day. The wife and I already have a Burley trailer for Ellie and have done 1 or 2 rides with the tandem and trailer to date. If anything riding with Ellie should get the two of us very ready to race again on the tandem... just need to find a babysitter for the race!

Cheers all,
Clint

UPDATE: (12/31/2004: 10:07 am) This issue has been fixed.

UPDATE: (12/31/2004: 8:08 am) Looks like the current hosting company "forgot" to move over the Shoes table when they moved me to a temp server prior to shutting the site down. Can't add a run until they get this fixed. ETA will be mid day Friday. Everyone thank Barton Stanley for pointing this error out!!!

clintthayer 01-01-05 04:34 PM

Saturday, 4:43 pm Central time: The move is in progress. I've updated the Domain addresses and uploaded the content to the new servers. I have much, much to say about the hosting company I'm leaving but I'm going to reserve my comments until I get all that I need from them.

SinGate 01-01-05 05:06 PM

It's cool Clint. We understand and appreciate all the work you do to help keep us healthy and happy!
I hope the new year finds you and all of your users well. :)

clintthayer 01-03-05 11:17 AM

Ok folks,

Site is back up and running. There might be a few things here and there, but for the most part it's back. Please let me know your thoughts on speed and if you encounter any errors.

Take a look at http://www.activebody.org/phpBB2/vie....php?p=386#386 for a little more info.

Cheers,
Clint

Invitation to join Team "Bike Forums" on Activebody.org

Just wanted to remind everyone that Clint Thayer (a member here) has a SWEET website for keeping track of those cycling (and running and swimming) miles. One of the nicer things is that you can join a team and get a sense of competition. Currently, Team Bike Forums has about 50 "members". There's no fee to join or use the site and it really is quite helpful in getting you into the saddle. Actually kept me out of the sophomore skump last year and motivated me to 2,500+ miles... Come on over and join up!

Team name: Bike Forums
