Bikes: Lots

Gotta Go Now!

Just had a staff meeting and found out that the IT Dept is now monitoring Internet usage and non-work related use must stop! That means me! No computer at home, so I guess I'm done!

You guys have been great and I hope to see you on the trails!

Oh Yeah, Merry Christmas! I really mean that!

You'll pop in to a library or cybercafe occasionally?

Can't you try and redefine your job description to include visting bikeforums

Take care

Bikes: 1998 Mongoose NX7.1, 2008 Kona Jake, GT singlespeed (year unknown).

Maybe you can sneak on during break/lunch. We'd hate to lose you. You tell those IT guys to mind their own business. We all know that they sit back in there playing video games.

I'm retired, so maybe I'm out of place putting my comment in, BUT---

if I were still working, and below a certain age, and that happened to me, I'd seriously look for another job. Not because I needed to have Internet access, but because the attitude of the employer is fundamentally wrong.

It's been shown time and again that the most productive and well-off companies value employer happiness highly, and allow their employees latitude in using spare time that includes use of the Internet.

Companies that are, essentially, afraid of their own employees, have a real problem.

OK, hope that wasn't too distasteful or out of line. Very sorry to hear a member has to quit because of such a stupid reason.

Sorry to see you go, especially for a reason like that.

Hope you can work out some other arrangement to keep posting!

Merry Christmas to you too!

I work with computers for a living, they can only monitor so much. Normaly when a IS dept. says things like that it is more the fear factor then anything else. They can not stop it, they can monitor the DNS to see where people are going, if they try to track you personaly they can but, they won't track every single person in the company. That would take WAY to many man hours. THey will monitor for specific things like porn sites and so on.. since that is un professional and could possibly damage there business. I wouuld say still come to the board, but don't do it every 5 minutes.. hahaha log on during lunch or break time few minutes here and there no one will care.

The more enlightened employers treat personal Internet access the same way they treat personal phone calls on company phones, i.e., a modest amount is tolerated. I typically check this forum and my e*Trade account once or twice per workday, while I'm taking a break or waiting for a big computer simulation to run.

Consider getting a used first-generation Pentium computer and a free dial-up Internet account at home. Participating in this forum does not require the latest, most powerful hardware and software.

I agree; when a company starts acting less like a father and more like Der Fuehrer, it's time to go. Few management types seem to understand that happy employees are productive employees.

I'm with John -- start looking for a better job with a less paranoid boss.

That really bites.

Set up a Yahoo mail account, forward all the subsciptions there and pop on for a few minutes a day during lunch or before work.

My company has the same policy and they tolerate this.

Good luck.

P.S. It's funny that you think you can actually leave.

The company I'll be working for next year has the same sort of policy, I don't think it's all that uncommon. Either way, syklenut will be missed.

I hate to say this but I'm completely against e-mailing from the workplace! I would not dream of mixing up my private affairs with the firm's. I would recommend getting an iMac and doing the business at home. Then it's etirely your own business.
Even my daughter who is a software engineer never does he e-mailing from the workplace...

Apart from the broadside that I'm expecting, I think you are great forummers on a brilliantly run forum.

Be nice

I can certainly visit this forum exclusively from home, but I can't manage my investments properly without visiting e*Trade a few times during each work week, while the market is open. I have never been a day-trader, but I do spend a total of about 20 min. per week to see if I need to take any urgent action. Since I typically work from about 6:00 to 5:00 five days a week, I don't feel terribly guillty about this.

Say it ain't so!

I sure hope you can find a way to get back on here at least occasionally. I will miss you and want to thank you so much for all the help you have given me over the last while. You are a great source of information and I do hope you find your way back to us.

One forum to rule them all. One forum to find them. One forum to bring them all and in the darkness bind them!

Good luck!

This is a big bummer, you've been at bikeforums for so long. I'm going to really miss your contributions to bikeforums. Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words and the support. Yes, I'm looking for a new job (writing on the wall), and I've decided to hang out a little more, at least till I leave for Christmas break (after Monday I'm off till 1-2-02! So, I'm going to take my chances and hang out for just a couple more days! Maybe I'll get a computer for Christmas! NOT! Only if I win the lottery and I don't even play! (I hate self imposed taxes) So, I'm here for a little while longer tonight, some tommorrow and if at all possible on Monday. After that, I might check in once a week or so, but what the boss man said, I might not be able to, even on my lunch break or after hours.

Well, at least I hope you can check in from the local public library. Even lots of small towns offer free Internet use (time-limited, of course) at the public libraries, and Sarasota is not a small town!

If I had the resources of, say, a Bill Gates, I'd send you a computer for Christmas--but then, if I had Bill Gates-type resources, I wouldn't be sitting here wishing I had heat in my apartment!

Just figure out some way to stay aboard, OK? And happy holidays!

I'm rebelling and hanging out for a little longer! But I'll always be around just not as often!
