That will make the 63,000 less dead, won't it.

Here are some numbers I'd like to know, so I can get all over-excited about more stuff:

1. How many people died in the US last year after getting scratched by a cat? More than zero? Cats are baaaad! Oh, and you might trip over a cat, too!

2. How many people died aafter taking a tumble off the bottom step of a atairway? And lets not even get INTO the death toll from higher steps! All steps are bad! No more steps! Get rid of them!

3. How many people died after tripping while walking down a wheelchair ramp? Wheelchair ramps! Get rid of them!

4. How many people died after being struck by a wheelchair? Wheelchairs! Make them walk!

5. And....ummm...well, now many people died accidentally while cleaning their guns? How many died when someone in house across the street was cleaning his gun (more than zero, I expect)? Guns! Get rid....um, well, is it legal now to say that in the US?

Just thinking. Not thinking to hard, though. That can hurt.

Peds should be required to be bubble-wrapped & helmeted at all times.

Considering how often I've nearly run into people in the grocery store (why oh why do they decide to stop suddenly in the middle of the aisle?) I wouldn't be totally adverse to this idea.

this is the kind of junk we gotta deal with as cycling gets more public attention. i guess it's nice that more people are riding and all that, but it's exhausting hearing everyone's opinions about it.

^^Yes you can. I've been hit by a cyclist and it's not a joke. A 12 year old girl on a bike hit me as I stepped out of a sidewalk bus shelter. She was going fast along the sidewalk and not paying attention to the fact she was approaching a blind spot. Her helmet hit my shoulder and her bars hit my hip. I'm a big guy and I was easily knocked down. If I had been an elderly woman with osteoporosis I would have at least broken a hip and quite possibly died. She's lucky she didn't careen off me into traffic which was only about 2 feet away.

At this rate, we will all know someone that has been killed by a cyclist. When are the powers that be going to end the carnage and get everyone back into their cars?

This reads like a automobilers complaining about cyclist. "its there fault!. They are probably against the light!!!". " Other things cause more deaths and accidents!!!!". Is it much? No, but these are people that are hit by inconsiderate cyclist. They are also more enviro-friendly than bikes.

Ironically, pedestrians are not more enviro-friendly than bikes.

+1... I once calculated (because I have too much time on my hands) that at my usual commuting speeds, I pack around 4-5 times the kinetic energy of a .45 ACP bullet. Granted, if I hit someone the impact would be more spread out, but still, it would hurt!

She looks like one angry *****...

I emailed her, but my subject said "Nice article on the arrogant cyclists" followed with "Now write an article on how many people drivers killed last year compared with the ONE death by a cyclist you arrogant *****." Ahh... satisfying.

Minor things. Ban bath tubs and showers. Deaths there actually ride to significant numbers. Of course if they were banned who knows how many deaths we would see from 'stink rage'

Also on the serious side, wheelchair ramps are a serious hazard to one handicapped group. The blind. Used to be they could tell where the curb was and thus where the road started. With ramps it is now very easy for them to miss this boundry. Bad thing to step in front of a moving car.
