Tangential wave story. Saturday I was at about mile 95 of a 100 mile ride, down along a tributary of the Shenandoah River in Virginia, with the leaves just starting to change. I rode past a bend in the river where three old guys were sitting on a fishing platform having a nice afternoon watching the crazy guy on a bike go by. They all three raised their arms in unison and gave me a nice friendly wave. Made my day for sure, and helped me make it the rest of the way back.

Define "old guys". Be careful now.

We did a 50 mile ride a couple of weeks ago and this little tyke was at the edge of his yard out in the country waving at the cyclists as they went by. I am sure it was a big event in his day. Made us feel good to see a friendly smile too.

I remember my first encounter with a "snob". I was on my dearly departed 1999 Raleigh R600. I was stopped at a light and a guy on a nice looking Specialized pulled up beside me. I said hello, nice day for riding, or something like that. The guy never looked at me or said a word. Just rode away.

I read this topic last night and thought about it constantly on this morning's ride, it started to piss me off that no one would even acknowledge me when I said 'good morning' as I passed. I'm back to focusing on riding and only saying hi to people I know. Oh yeah, I ride around Lincoln, NE and in three years of cycling have never once had someone wave at me from another bike before.

Maybe they were thinking about the latest football scores and the good ol' days of the coach who was fired because of the Cornhusker's "medicocre" 9-3 record. Or the fact that Texas Tech is favored to beat Big Red by 21 points this Saturday.

Ha, I do live in an unfriendly neighborhood around 27th and Vine but I ride all over town and out in the country on Hwy 77, Mopac and Homestead trails. I have come across several friendly people but for the most part on the city trails people don't acknowledge my nods or greetings.

Around my part of the world, maybe one out of 50 kit wearers will acknowledge a commoner ... I go for the WTF look and throw them the motorcycle wave (left arm pointed to the ground with 2 fingers) ... confuses the heck out of them.
