I'm new to cycling and am trying to buy my first road bike. I found this bike on craigslist, and it seems to be a really nice bike.

It went and checked it out, and it had some scratches and such, but for the most part it is in good shape. The bike fits me, and I like the saddle he's got on it.

He's not selling it with pedals.

I called a local bike shop and they said the 1500 sold originally for $900. I offered $600 for it (he originally wanted $800).

What do you think?

Seems reasonable, although certainly not a mindblowingly amazing deal. Are you sure about the $900 figure? The bike's outfitted with Ultegra and some Cane Creek goodies-- seems a bit more upmarket to me.

Selling a bike like this without pedals is pretty normal; it's expected that you have your own preferred pedal system.

Original MSRP was $1149. If you bought it for $600 that was fair. Not smoking, but a decent price and worth it if the bike was in decent shape. CL usually 50-60% of MSRP on a couple year old bike is a decent deal.

I haven't bought the bike yet, so $600 is a number I just threw out. I think he wants high 7 or high 6's for it.

$700 isn't a bad price for that bike. Not fantastic, but not bad. Although for that price on a used bike, I would try to get 10 spd rather than 9. I say this only because that seems to be the direction that all of the manufacturers are going (or are there already), and upgrading to 10 spd gets pretty expensive when you have to change shifters, derailler, cassette and chain. I wish I had hung out for a 10 spd.

Secondhand and around 3 years old and 50% of the retail is what it would be worth in good condition. So I reckon $600 would be the price for it. Especially as the seller is the 2nd owner. He would not have paid anything like retail for it. And the modifications may have been necessary to replace the worn out parts made necessary with use. They count for nothing.

3 year old bikes and it doesn't matter whether it is 9 or 10 speed. They both work and in fact I would prefer 9 speed- but that is me personally. In fact as it is ONLY 9 speed- cuts the bargaining price a bit.

So $600 and if you don't get this one- a better one for the same price will come along. Just might have to wait a bit for it.

It is a so so deal i thought. I have also bought a new bike, it is a K2 Easy Roller Coasting Bike,The suspension seat is really great (it is not just a seat post; it's much better than that). The handlebars put the grips right where her hands are; no leaning forward.
