This happened a short distance from where I live. It's been on the news all day for obvious reasons.

6 members of a Trialthlon club were on their way to a weekend training camp when a GMC truck ran into them.

Police don't have all the details yet, but alcohol has been ruled out.

3 women are dead, and 2 women and 1 man are in critical condition.

The same thing has happened in local Montreal websites. Comments are coming from drivers that have the cyclist community enraged.

If you read the comments of some folks on the CBC's site you would be upset. A couple think roads are only for motor vehicles and are blaming the victims (cyclists).

A friend of mine was driving a car this last week. He was on a 2-lane road, stopped to make a left turn. A pickup rearended him, pushing him in front of an oncoming minivan, and he was killed. The pickup then did the hit-n-run thing and police are currently looking for it.

This was in the Dallas area. A WEEK after it happened, there was a small article in the Royce City newspaper about it. That's all. A guy gets killed in a hit-and-run and Dallas news doesn't even blink.

The moral is, yes, that's bad when cyclists get killed, but then there's a 100 times as many motorists that do. At least that is rare enough to make the news.

This is horrible. My condolences to the victims' families.

Relevance? Especially the part about the tires...I'm surprised there were no comments about whether they were wearing helmets.

To be a bit controversial, every story about a cyclist being killed reeks of ridiculous excuses for ****: blaming the victim. The difference is that blaming the victim in the instance of **** has become taboo, but somehow using a small, vulnerable vehicle means you were "asking for it."

I live near there so I can clarify that.

There's a bike path that runs parallel to this road. The beginning of that specific bike path is paved; the middle and the end however are not.

The real story here is that you have a stretch of road that is approxmately 45 kilometers of traffic-heavy conditions. The first and last 20 kms are nicely paved with a wide shoulder. The middle 5 km is not. It's in horrible condition and there is no paved shoulder. That's where they were hit.

The general cycling population is aware of this particular road and it's current condition and the risks of the middle part, however most cyclists will say "Well it's only 5 miles, so let's take a chance." And therein lies the result.

"The weather was cloudy, but no rain was reported in the morning. Highway traffic was rerouted while police investigated."

There was a light rain yesterday morning and it was very cloudy. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the cyclists were wearing dark colours with no rear lights.

A bit of local knowledge here... I had a road bike for 3 years before I traded it in this spring for a mountain bike (went back to mtbing actually). I've often ridden in Quebec, New York State, and Vermont. Quebec motorists are by far the worst of the bunch. I do not recall a single time where a NY or Vermont motorist had graised me. Maybe it's the culture, maybe it's the severe laws that govern those states, maybe it's because you're out in the country and folks and less stressed out. I really don't know. I can tell you lthat Quebecers, and I am one of them so I can speak freely on this, have a doubtful lack of respect towards one another. This includes cyclists. I've seen cyclist behavior first hand and it reeks of arrogance. I don't think Quebec is alone in this, but it is there.
