I do it. I'm 22. I don't race, or really plan too. Wore shorts yesterday, didn't get any comments.

I'm a fairly hairy guy, or would be . . .

Hairy legs and bike shorts? And sweaty too?

Men remove body hair for all sorts of reasons and have for centuries: religious reasons, aesthetic reasons, hygiene reasons, etc., etc. You don't have to fall back on road rash or massage as a justification.

A possibly new reason to shave occurred to me recently. When applying cream-based sunscreens, it seems like leg hair just makes more of a nasty mess of putting the stuff on. It's nasty stuff to put on to begin with and the hair just seems to make more of a mess. Of course wearing sunscreen is something I struggle with, in that I know as a fair-haired person of pasty-white Scots/Irish descent I should be wearing sunscreen but I don't. As a result I burn, then peel, then freckle. Hmm... may have to revisit my decision not to shave.

Um, the pharmaceuticals to kick in?

Beanz, you're perfect just like you are. Don't change a thing.

So does this article have any test data of aerodynamic improvement when shaving or not?

Wait. You are quoting the 1988 article they had showing L. Fignon (Rest his Soul) lost the TdF to LeMond because of his pigtail.

I shaved for years. The main reason I did it was as an identifier to other cyclists. Nobody ever came up and said, "Hi. I see you're a cyclist.", and started a conversation; so one day I decided it just wasn't worth the hassle anymore.

I think there have been some theoretical results showing leg hair is more aerodynamic. If you are familiar with turbulent boundary layers, that was the reason.

But your exposed leg skin is such a small area (just the knees and calves really) I cannot imagine it would make any significant difference.

I think I'm gonna stick with Dave Weins on this one. I just need to come up with a cool nickname like his - The Vanilla Gorilla.

I just noticed that article in the copy lying on my floor. I don't read the mag but a relative bought me a subscription.

I was amused by the page that recommended vintage Rolls Razors for it. I've got three of those things on the table, just in need of good cleanings, new strops and a sharpening on the Norton. I'd been thinking they'd handle better on my legs than the straights.

The other amusing thing is how hard they made it sound, my girlfriend agreed. Don't know about you guys but I didn't have any trouble keeping the skin on my legs the first time I shaved them.

Do what you want. You're an adult, they don't pay your bills, and the ONE you chose to SPEND YOUR LIFE WITH is on board with it.

You owe explanations to NO ONE, other than the spousal unit.

And don't worry -- sooner or later, the leg hair will chafe off, leaving less to shave and less to notice when you do. Or maybe that's just my family........
