Blood Pressure While Riding
Has anyone here ever taken their blood pressure while riding ? Due to a serious medical condition that I experienced a year ago I have to be very careful with my blood pressure and I wasnt sure if I could ever ride again.
For the last 3 months I have done moderate rides of about 10-15 miles and my testing has shown my BP never gets above 135/85. My average resting BP is about 100/60.
I have read many studies that show static exercises with valsalva (weight lifting) can get BP's up to 350/275.
However, exercise where regular and consistant ventilation occurs apaprently never gets close to that.
Now that the tour de france is on I would love to see what those guys get or average on mountain stages.

The figure of merit is "resting pressure"number, number at high heartbeat rates,is most likely immaterial..
IE.150BPM vs resting of 70 or so...

This doesn't address your question directly, but I have pretty dismal cardiac genetics (both parents and a brother had problems in their 40s), and began to show symptoms myself 20 years ago, in my mid-40s. I lucked into a cardiologist who was my age and also had some minor rhythm and BP issues. He was a runner and cyclist, as I was, and didn't discourage me from intense exercise. We talked quite a bit about BP, and the consensus seemed to be that while it does go up significantly during exercise, the overall benefits far outweigh the risks for most people. Check with your own doc, of course...
