Degreaser
#2
I run my chain through a cleaning machine until it is throughly saturated with degreaser. Then I run the chain through a shop rag until it no longer leaves any residue, meaning until the chain is grime free. Then I run the chain a bit to let the degreaser dry out. Then I lub it up really well. Hope this helps.

I think the important thing is that you have to remove the degreaser AND the grime from the chain before oiling it. Otherwise the degreaser will dissolve the oil, or you'll just be putting dirty gritty oil on your chain.
