I learned (or remembered really) what great fun and exercise cycling is and can be. After many years off a bike I got back into it and got my wife and son (3 yrs he is on a trailer bike) doing it with me. I am using cycling as a fun outdoor activity with the family as well as to loose some major weight (was 255, now 219, going for 175).
This sport clearly has many benefits.

I've learned that if you don't quite bridge the gap, you can blow up and get shot out the back. I've learned to fight for the gutter and stay on the eschelon in a cross wind. I've learned that 100 miles in a day passes quickly and easily when you ride with friends. I've learned that SKS makes fenders that fit my bike and they make a huge difference in my enjoyment of wet weather.

I've learned that "having to be" inside during cold, wet, or hot weather kills your soul.
I've learned that being outside riding in crappy weather makes me want to do more long distance touring, multi-day sailing, and other outdoors sports in all four seasons.
Everything can be an accomplishment for a next step.

i learned that if it snows and i can't get on the bike for 3-4 days, my neighbors begin to mysteriously disappear and the cops come sniffing around my house asking me if i have any information.
so i bought a trainer.
