It was great...this kid BLASTS past me on his NEXT Full suspension dept. store bike...bout 2 minutes later, me still chugging along at my regular pace I passed him listening to him panting. I found it rather amusing since he was showing his ass.

The DMV is in my neighborhood, hence TONS of student drivers. Once or twice a month I get to blow by one on my fully loaded commuter. It's a great feeling!

Except that he's talking about some kid on a NEXT x-mart bicycle blowing by him at full steam and then him catching up to the kid a couple of minutes later after the poor kid had worn himself out trying to show off.

Ya I know we get that all the time... I love when I blow by someone on a training ride to watch them get smaller and smaller as they try and catch up... just makes me want to go faster...

Sounds like a typical summer ride for me around here. Sometimes there are packs of kids on freestyle BMX, cheap Wal-Mart, and stolen bikes. I ride by them, or through them, then they try to chase me. Most of the time I don't even bother to step up the pace, I just keep my speed and watch them fall.

Those are always the fun ones. I had someone do that to me in the opening 15-20 miles of a double century. I was keeping a nice steady pace and he kept blasting past me, only to crack a little bit later and watch me pass by him. He did this 5 or 6 times. I still wonder how he felt at the end of 200 miles if that's how he rode the whole way.

As an aside, I know TRD stands for Toyota Racing Dev. but whenever I see your name, I think "Powered by Turd."

I had a similar experience with some idiot BMX'ers who were blocking the whole bike path. The whoe story is in this thread. When I got around them, I taunted them a little, but I got away as quickly as possible. Caloso said I should have stayed in front of them for as long as I could, making fun of their speed and egging them on to try to keep up with me. Then I could have left them both exhausted and humiliated, instead of merely humiliated.

This always happens on the centuries I do... the "peloton"... the guys who can't get over their delusions of being in the Tour, pass through the middle of our pack at 24-28mph trying to look cool by shoving old ladies into the weeds, while on their carbon fibre imports. Then they get a bit embarrassed when I step it up and pull to the head of their group and pull the pack for awhile on my lugged steel Tigra/105/Ultegra steed.

Yeah, yeah. I know the feeling, you know the feeling. What, does it make you a better person? Look at me I passed a 13 year old kid on his cheap ass bike, look at me i can take on Lance now...
Quit bragging, I bet if I go 10 miles an hour and you go 20 after some time I will also catch up to you and leave you behind. Maybe the kid was doing a sprint. Stop thinking everyone out there is showing off.

When you pass somebody like that it's far classier to act like it has happened before and you expect it to happen again sometime.

Umm considering the fact that the kid in question sprinted to pass PWRD (who's around 400 lbs and falling) draw you're own conclusions. Hte kid's a straight up JERK and PWRD has every right to feel good about passing him.

And the fact is, he just kept going at his regular speed like it was no big deal... The kid sprinted and tired himself out. The kid was trying to show up the fat guy or something. PWRD just kept pedalling like normal and didn't make an effort to show the kid up. It just happened that way.

I don't think that's much to be proud of, the kid's 13 years old on a bmx bike. How do you know the kid was doing it on purpose? I sprint and pass people a lot on my Litespeed, dur I must be pompous roadie in tight spandex.

Put the same kid on a 700x23 150psi litespeed and the 400 lb man's gonna be several miles behind. But hey, to each their own to make themselves feel better. My gf and I plow pass kids on BMX bikes all the time, if we ever do end up racing, we leave em in the dust but we all laugh and smile about it, we're all riding on the same street after all.

It all depends on the attitude of the BMXer's. My experience is that many (notice, I did not say "all") kids on BMX bikes grossly overestimate the capabilities of themselves and their bikes. In another thread, a scout leader said he had a hard time convincing his scouts that BMX bikes were not the best bikes for a long ride. Some BMXer's think that since they're 16 and their bikes are cool, they can blow away any 30+ year old.

As PWRDbyTRD learned, it's fun proving them wrong.

If PWRDbyTRD had come up behind the kid and challenged the kid to a race, I'd say PWRDbyTRD was being a jerk. But here, the kid tried to show how cool he was by buzzing past PWRDbyTRD at an unsustainable speed. PWRDbyTRD just gave the kid a well-deserved ego-deflation.

I get that warm fuzzy feeling when I pass rude cagers that feel like they need to honk thier horns at me and tell me to get outta the road. I just wave while I roll past them whilest they're trapped in gridlock.

Keep pounding them pedals, you'll feel better and better about it. It comes to a point where you KNOW you're imporving and doing something good for yourself. Losing the pounds suddenly isn't your primary motivator (though they still drop).

Hey, passing stories are almost always good! Keep up the hard work, pwrd. Pretty soon you'll be regalling us with stories of passing 'more worthy' opponents, small packs... who knows were it'll end?

My first conquest was a kid on a BMX gutting it out against a stiff headwind. He saw me coming and tried to stay ahead. I just smiled and said "Hi" as I rolled on by. It made me appreciate the fact that I enjoyed an aerodynamic advantage from my recumbent over him despite the fact that my legs were far older and still becoming "recumbentized".

I understand that, but kids are kids. Mashing and spinning really fast while standing up is the ONLY way to get ANY speed out of the BMX bike. I don't know at which point he decided the kid was actually trying to "show off" or anything.
