During the first four years of our marriage, my wife and I were virtually carless in west Los Angeles, although we did have limited access to my grandfather's car for long trips. We walked, biked, or rode transit and enjoyed the lifestyle. After I was struck by an errant motorist while riding home from work in 1977, my wife, who was always somewhat timid on the road, developed a morbid fear of cycling in traffic. In response, I began carpooling and riding transit to work and restricting my recreational cycling to early weekend mornings; she almost completely gave up road cycling. Since then, she has tolerated my gradual return to transportation cycling in traffic, but looks very relieved whenever I return home safely. I know she enjoys cycling, however, because she occasionally borrows my mountain bike for multitrack trail or bikeway use.

My SO enjoys riding, but only on very lightly travelled residential streets or bike paths. However, that's preferable to her not doing any at all, or the two of us never riding together.
She does tolerate my riding/commuting though, so I still get my share of good riding done.
