Thinking About Buying A Salsa? Better Hurry.

If you are planning on buying a Salsa bike anytime soon I would go ahead and jump on any 2012 models you can still find. I was in my local shop today and they were telling me that Salsa informed them that there would be roughly a $300 increase on every model for 2013.

Bikes: 2012 Salsa Casseroll, 2009 Kona Blast

And some models, like the Casseroll, are now discontinued. I bought a Casseroll earlier this summer. When I did, I asked the shop owner whether it wouldn't make more sense to just wait for the 2013 models. He hinted that it might not be available. Many of their new models start at $2 K.

It makes shopping for used bikes sound that much better.

You mean harder. People will either be holding on to what they got a bit longer or they'll be asking more for when they do sell. Of course, the CL pricing will vary from area.

Bikes: 1976 Motobecane Grand Jubile, Austro Daimler 'Ultima', 2012 Salsa Vaya, 2009 Trek 4300, Fyxation Eastside, State Matte Black 6, '97 Trek 930 SHX, '93 Specialized Rockhopper, 1990 Trek 950

I'm all fairness, it still looks like money well spent. Looking at a Vaya3, Salsa has done some upgrades on the 2013 model, such as moving from Avid BB5 brakes to AVID BB7's.

lol, I don't remember a salesman of any type ever telling me to wait till next years model comes out....on the contrary, they always say buy it now, it may not be available later...and even if it is, it ill be way more expensive.

They need to make sales TODAY and will tell you whatever they need to to help to decide to buy today!

Meh, that's what happens when a company makes a good product. When I bought a Salsa Mukluk 2 all of the dealerships in Wisconsin were sold out. The nearest dealer with them in stock was in Illinois, and they had a couple flying in from Iowa to buy a pair.

Except in this case, the salesman was telling the truth.

Well, I wasn't looking to buy. I was just in shootin' the bull and looking at tail lights. I stop in once a week at this shop just to say hello whether I need anything or not.

Bikes: Raleigh Mountain 200.....Giant Escape 0

I was at a Seattle bike shop last week and was able to ride the Jamis Bosanova, Jamis Coda, Salsa Vaya and Salsa Casseroll. I liked the Casseroll best with the Vaya coming in second. The bike shop folks informed me that Salsa was indeed dropping the Casseroll and was going to be producing bikes more "high end".

The bike shop had the 2012 Casseroll at around $1200 but also had a 2010 Casseroll at $1450. The 2010 had the 105 components and the long reach brakes instead of the cantilevers. Any opinions on which year would be a preferred purchase?

That is a common tendency of both bikes and cars. Each year the product upgrades, after 3 or 4 years the current models are more comprable to one that was a step or 2 higher up those 3-4 years ago.

And, prices me out of the market. I am a value shopper when it comes to bicycles and don't like to spend a lot (I've had two bicycle stolen which leaves a guy a little nervous). I bought a 2009 Seek 2 and have been pretty happy with a bike I paid $625 for.
