Thought I'd take advantage of the beautiful weather today, and get in a ride after work. Riding an unfamiliar route, saw some kids on a tractor coming down the road with three dogs following them. Seemed friendly enough, so I didn't think much about it. As I road past, the largest of the three streaked over, barking and growling, and bit me on the calf. The other two decided to join the fun for a couple hundred yards. Mangaged to stay ahead of them till they lost interest. Nothing serious, but it did bleed a bit, and is developing a nice bruise. Called the Sherrif on my cell, sent out a car to take all of the information. Hopefully after he visits, they'll keep their dogs in control in the future. Guess I'm going to consider carrying pepper spray. Been chased many times, but this is the first time I've been bitten.

90% of dog owners suck. They let their dogs crap and run all over the place without any regard for anyone else. All the chickens I've ever run in my back yard have been killed by dogs. I don't bother trying to keep chickens anymore for that reason. I try to capture them. Eventually some make it to the compost heap. The others get taken to the dog pound... prolly where I ought to be working - minus their collars.

Always pay attention to your surroundings while cycling. Anticipate the dogs intent. A good loud, and I mean loud "NO", "GET", or "GO HOME" will usually work well. Dogs hate being sprayed from a water bottle. Frame pumps get their attention also! Other than that, few dogs can keep up with a good sprint.

Don't forget to use neosporin on your bite. Go back to the location to get vet records for those dogs.

Did the "NO" thing, loudly, and repeatedly. LOL Water bottle was empty, wasn't smart enough to stop and get off of the bike, started the sprint a little late. Had there only been one dog, it would have been a little easier to avoid. Could have been worse. As I said the bite wasn't serious. The officer at the scene said that they would verify health records of the dogs, and contact me.

I carry this EVERY time i step onto the bike. Only had to use it a couple times and I can tell you that it works. BTW, when i see multiple dogs i unclip this spray from my waistband and have it at the ready. That usually spells trouble.

Really, something like skunk butt juice would be good. That way, when snookies gets home and jumps up on their lack luster master he'd need a good washing before he would be allowed back inside to sit and fart in front of the TV that rarely gets turned off.

Man do I agree with that. Dogs need to be leashed or chained. I've always had cats and I'd frequently see some large canine chasing one of my little ******* up a tree. If one of those big brutes had ever hurt one of them I'd probably whip out the ol' weapon of mass destruction and say something like this ...

I haven't been bitten by a dog on my bike yet, I can usually outrun them if I go into a dead sprint.

If the sprint doesn't work I resort to a kick in the face with my shoes. First kick is more of a tap with the outer side of my foot, second kick is a short blow to the chest, just enough to knock the wind out of them.

Sorry to all you dog lovers, but the kick does considerably less damage than if I were to fall on them.

My bud says you can hold your water bottle out, threateningly, I'm sure, and they usually won't venture under it to bite your leg. Somebody try that and tell me how it works.

It's been my experience that HALT or similar sprays don't always work. I've got the scars ro prove it.

Having had the odd tangle with dogs I would recomend to dismount and put the bike between you and the dog. This has the effect of taking all of the fun out of it for the dog. And if it does attack you have the bike to pummel it with.

As for trying to out run a dog, it's a really bad idea. It's fun for Fluffy to chase you! And if Fluffy just happens to be faster than you? You can get bit AND crash.

iv found that if you turn around and ride twards the dog they usually put there tails between their legs and go the other way. bikers are only fun to chase, they dont want to fight you.

Yowzer! I hate cats! The world is their litter box, nothing like gardening and finding cat turds everywhere!

Dogs, of which I have owned many, should be confined to their own yards. wish I could say the same for
cat owners who let they little darlings prowl and annoy at will.

Try it on the dog owner, maybe after a couple dozen sprays they will follow the law and keep their animals fenced. Sorry to hear that you got bit, really gets me fired up.

You should also pay your doctor a visit, just in case. If a dog bite penetrates the skin, it can very easily get infected. My 5 year old got bit in the hand while riding up and down our street about 10 days ago. It punctured the skin in three places, and drew a few drops of blood. I called his pediatrician right away. Followed their instructions on cleaning with peroxide, and using antibacterial ointment, and scheduled a dr. visit for the following day. When he arrived at the doctor, the bite was already infected, and he had to go on a 10 day antibiotics treatment.

I checked the Animal Control web site for our county (Harris County), and all dog bites that punctures the skin had to be reported to Animal Control. I called them, and they showed up at our door the very next morning, took all our information down, and proceeded down the street to check for current rabies vaccine and take the dog into custody. The dog had to be quaranteened for 10 days.

The family who owned the dog adopted it a few months ago from a local animal shelter. From what I've heard they've decided to return the dog to the shelter.

For me, outrunning a dog is probably not an option with these Borg implants not allowing full speed ahead just yet.



I'd have to shoot back as it were. Personally, if I found I was being harrassed by a lot of dogs, I'd whip up some kind of fox urine/oil/paint combo. When Fifi ran home, the owner would have to contend with paint smears on car/furniture/clothes. To me it's a question of creating the most inconvenience for both the dog and it's owner. At the very least, the dog's gonna get a bath and the owner, well, they might wonder how snookums got covered in the crap that he did.

Aaak! I'm so sorry you were bitten like that. Glad it wasn't worse though (I learned the word hematoma when I was 9 and my mother was bitten by a pit bull). I think you handled it well--calling the sheriff, rather than whipping out a 12-guage double-barrelled Remington and shooting the thing because it's owners weren't controlling it.

I got bitten once, last year, but I was partly to blame. A woman was walking her dog (off leash, but lots of people do in that area, though technically they're not supposed to) on the side of the bike path and it was one of those big grey floppy-eared jobs--so cute, so loveable. When he came running up to me, my heart melted and I stopped to pet him, thus unwittingly encouraging the chasing behavior. He let me pet him, then as I tried to ride away, he chased me again and chomped my thigh. Didn't break the skin, but I had a really disturbing bruise.

I don't stop for dogs anymore. And I always make sure to keep mine on a leash or in my ample-sized fenced-in backyard.
