interesting technology for bike path

I just read an article in my local Dutch newspaper about this bike path (which is close to where I live).

You'll have to scroll down to see the bike path in a night setting where the stones in the path radiate light. This is more artistic than perhaps practical, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Before I even opened the thread, I knew it HAD to have something to do with Holland. One of the few pro-active countries in the world when it comes to designing and implementing infrastructures of this nature.

I'm glad that Google Chrome has a translation feature . I wonder how it might effect riders on a sunny day though? Interesting article.

Cheers

While I was Googling this bike path, I stumbled upon the following article which you might find interesting as well ...

I had a quick look at that Dave. Awesome. I have to get ready to head out the door soon, so I will read the entire article later. From what I see, it should add a great deal of safety to our roads at night, but will we see it on this side of the pond I wonder? I hope so, but I can't help but doubt it. From what I see going on in my own city, we seem to be going backwards in the way they deal with our roadways. Before they used to lay down nice smooth roads, now they are using this horrible chip seal, or whatever they call it. Like I said - backwards. Let's wait and see though. Considering my city was voted Red Neck City #10 in the US, I don't hold out much hope, but perhaps in more progressive neighborhoods (wherever they are), we might very well see this new technology. Like I said, I will read this article later. I find it very interesting.

Cheers
Wayne

Looks cool. Just mix those rocks in with the gravel when resurfacing roads, would be perfect in my area.

In the US, too few cyclists and even fewer at night to justify the cost in most places.

Had a chance to read the link Dave. One of the things I like is the roadway designed for electric cars (electric priority lanes), and wouldn't it be nice to have similar bike paths for electric bicycles. Charge as you go. I see that as a great alternative to the continued burning of fossil fuels. Electric cars do not have enough battery power to allow for long distance driving as yet, and this will help greatly for travelling, and let's not forget the help to our dwindling pocket books these days. The time has come to make some serious changes before we destroy this home (planet) of ours. Great article.

Is it true that in some cases, old auto tires are ground down into tiny particles and added to asphalt in order to achieve a better ride quality for highways?

Yes, we can't install these bike paths in any state that has legalized recreational marijuana -- traffic would come to a standstill.

Oh, wait... Holland? How does that work?

Did you watch the video... they got off their bikes and laid down on the path:

Now, see, that works fine for a scene from "The Fault in Our Stars," but on a bike path? Not so much.

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

If that kind of thing interests you, check out the "high trestle trail" near Des Moines, Iowa. It has some artistic night lighting.
