15 miles solo, about 30 degrees F and a bit windy. Passed two golf courses, which were busy with new-years-day golfers. What lunatics

No need to avoid it, just be careful.
There are plenty of other ice patches along the entire route,
I managed to ride around all of them.
Houbolt I could see a few ice patches.
Have fun out there.
Edit, 01-03:
I drove by the I&M access at the east frontage road & I-55 in Channahon this morning, the trail is closed there.
According to:
https://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/lan...KS/Alerts.html
"The trail section between I-55 and Rockdale is also closed due to numerous washouts."

25 miles outside, I don't know how cold it was, but all the water was frozen. For the first time this winter, I saw another rider outside, we know eachother and he turned around and we talked for a little bit about 2009 racing.
Oh yeah, I rode on my FS MTB rig, so a lot of riding in snow and grass and stuff.

One of my new year resolutions is to bike more miles in '09 than drive. I don't have a blog, and I really don't want to blog, but I will be using this thread as my mileage blog.
Car odometer - 108181
Car miles - 0
Bike miles - 0

it took me a second or two to find this thread as i wasnt looking at the top. i think its my first stickie.
another first for me took place today as i rode my bike outside. many here are some hardcore winter vets, but not me. unless we get freaky warm winter weather i normally do not take to the road until march.
i put in 30 miles on the road bike. it was very cold. very windy. i lost feeling in my fingers. my water bottles froze up. i loved every mile of it. a much needed cycling rush and stress reliever.
later.

I figured this thread got lots of posts so it would be easier for us all to find if it was just stuck to the top.....

1/3 - 8.8 miles
Would of done more if it was sunny and not as windy. Went over to the Golden Corral for lunch, then rode thru Marycrest Subd., behind Walmart, then down along McDonough to Houbolt, then back north on the RRGT towards home. Didn't notice much after plane crash activity since they had it moved to the hanger.

Did I ever ride today! Nope, not far, and not fast. I rode 18 miles through the snow and ice. The sun was out (never happens in the winter here), the air was crisp and clean (is it ever not at 18F?), and there wasn't a sound when I stopped for a break. Slipping and sliding away down the plowed and unplowed roads was exhilarating! I even jackknifed a few times as the back tire slid, I managed not to fall once. I'll have to start earlier and ride farther next time. Now if I could only find another rider as nuts as I.

42 miles in just over two and a half hours with a high of 29F. The wind was light but persistent and was a PITA for the first half. It shifted from the south after noon and made the second half a PITA as well.

Woohoo!!!
It's getting colder out and there is black-ice everywhere. The first time I must have slid 30-40 feet. Good times. Good times.

I did a spin around the block on Friday; it worked out to about 5 miles. A couple of times I thought I was going to pass out
I didn't get out yesterday, and today the roads are covered with ice. Ah, well. Maybe sometime this week, I can get out after work.

a 4 mile run today. I wasn't feeling it. AT ALL.
My new bike will be here soon, so I take solace in that.
I'm now getting decals cut for my backup carbon Vuelta wheels.

23.4 miles @ 18.9 tonight with my son. I thought we rode faster, but, we did take it easy for the first couple miles and noodled the final mile. Just a nice hard steady pace with no sprints or hills. Winds were lighter than predicted and temp was 23 degrees at the end. I miss the Christmas lights already.

Yep rode today and yesterday for the first time since thanksgiving, dont know the miles but i went to school in the loop and in lincoln park, and to friends houses up by belmont and montrose. First time riding in the snow, and I have to say, pretty fun. Rode home with fresh snow falling, making fresh tracks on side streets the whole way, gnarly powder man! but then again I'm all about the winter sports so I have the appropriate gear to stay warm.
I think I found a way to stay in shape in between ski trips, only problem is that I have only one bike, fairly nice, kinda rare, always stored indoors and whatnot. I'm really not sure if I want to subject it to those conditions on a daily basis. I have a second frame that I was thinking of building up, but the cash is going towards my main winter addiction, skiing. I live by the mantra that you buy something to use it not look at it through a glass case. If think that Im going to make sure to wash it down every couple of days and keep a close eye on maintenance.
Anyone else ride their primary bike during the winter? Any preventative or cleaning tips to offer?

I Wanted to go last night, but we had snow/ice fall last night, and the roads were slippery. Cold+dark+slippery roads+salt trucks = no ride for petflunky.
