You can do the change if you want. Or, perhaps consider some treking bars. It may be better to just find a cheap road bike or cyclocross bike.

The cost adds up quickly. You may need:
  • Handlebars
  • Possibly handlebar stem (keep in mind there are a few standards, 1" stem (22.2mm quill), and 1 1/8" (25.4mm quill) are common. You probably have the larger 25.4mm quill.
  • Brake Levers (get a long pull such as the Tektro levers, or see notes on Travel Agent).
  • Shifters (or integrated with the brake levers)
  • New brake and derailleur cables and housings.
  • Depending on the brake lever choice, perhaps also a "Travel Agent" to convert brake pull.
  • Handlebar tape

What type of shift levers do you have in mind? I've snagged some stem shifters for cheap. They're functional. On my most recent build, I had some old Suntour stem shifters made for a 1" stem (22.2mm quill) which I was able to barely coerce onto a 1 1/8" (25.4mm quill), but I seem to run into lots of problems mixing and matching old and new stuff.

Are you in Portland?

Bikes: Many

What are you looking to gain? Speed? More hand positions?

As an observation, you would pick up some of the benefits of a drop bar bike by raising your saddle, if speed is your objective...this would allow you to do 3 things.

1) Ride in a more aerodynamic position.
2) Extend your legs for better efficiency.
3) Cost nothing.

This could be done in conjunction with trekking bars previously mentioned.

While I have seen some bikes that people have converted, unless you have a lot of the components on hand, because the bicycle manufacturers get great prices on components, it may cost as much as buying a similar quality drop bar bike. Clifford pointed out how come the process can get more expensive than you would initially think. It gets really expensive if you want the modern integrated drop bar brake/shift levers.

Also, I would be hesitant to convert a bicycle with front suspension into a drop bar bike... No concrete reason, it just strikes me as something I wouldn't want to try personally. It may be fine.

I second Trekking/Butterfly Bars. You could mount them with a variety stems for a multitude of hand positions and you would not need to replace the shifters....

A conversion like that impacts a lot of things. You can make smaller changes that may suit you; but if you really want a road bike, then maybe you should get a road bike instead of converting a bike.

There is an ergonomic grip that you might try on your bike as it is. How long of rides do you go on? ERGON BIKE ERGONOMICS

I don't know how it would affect the thumb, but it might help with the hand in general.

The Trekking butterfly bars should give you a variety of grip positions, but allow you to reuse most of your MTB parts, making the conversion much simpler than doing a full drop-bar conversion.

I thought that looked like a Portland house (plus the tree on the license plate).

What has the doctor said about the thumb? You don't have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, do you?

Perhaps a wrist and thumb brace?

Multiple handholds may help. I do have a lot of drop in my bars, but at times I'll just hold on with the fingers, or even finger webbing.

Are you saying that your left thumb is in pain do to the shifter or do to your hand position?

Arthritis?

That is a good question, whether the goal is to get more hand positions, or to change the shifters to a different style other than thumb shifters.
